Posted - 08/12/2014 : 02:22:54 We finally got to get Draco out into the big world and have a bit of a handle and give him some food. The first encounter could have gone better with me trying to get him out of the viv. He decided it would be a good idea to accelerate and launch himself off of the substrate and almost through my hands and onto the floor, but luckily I managed to get to him quick enough.
I then spent a few minutes letting him explore around my hands, with a couple of initial attempted bites as he was obviously feeling a bit threatened. He calmed down considerably after that and even got to the point where he rested his head on my thumb :)
At this point I thought it would be a good idea to hand him to my daughter for her to have her first proper hold. It was also an ideal opportunity to take some pictures, but whilst collecting the camera from the floor all I heard was " Dad, he's biting me". I thought that he had just done a few little nips as previously, but on turning around I could see that he was feeling a bit peckish and trying to swallow my daughters knuckle! He eventually decided that she wouldn't make a good meal and released leaving a nice mouth shaped tooth mark and a little blood. Nothing major and the only thing really damaged was my daughters confidence in holding him, but I'm sure that will come back the more Drako gets used to us and her to him.
We put him into the container, weighed him, got his length (a Whopping 9 grams and 12.5" long lol) and then fed him his pinky. Here are some pictures of him enjoying his meal.
The pinkies we have are quite small and looking at the lack of any real lump after swallowing do you think we should double up or pick some bigger pinkies on the next supply run?

Posted - 09/02/2015 : 00:24:31 A weigh in and measure last night shows that Drako is now a fatty! He's just shy of 15.5" and weighing in at 15 grams. That's 3" in length and 6 grams since we've had him (2 months) so not bad at all.
Whilst taking him out to give him a feed we found that he is deep in blue again only five weeks after the last shed. Poor little thing was completely blind and got scared at the pinkie swinging in front of him until he caught the smell :) |

Posted - 13/12/2014 : 09:15:19 Just wondering- is Drako in wooden viv, or on wooden furniture? The wood will resonate with the music ( guitars and violins are made of wood - and it amplifies the sound, so it must be similar ), so he feels it as vibes
Have you tried hoovering near the Viv? That ALWAYS brings my snakes out... Hubby says that's it's because it's such a rare occasion, that they come to have a look, cheeky git! |

Lol...my two corns seem to enjoy it when I play my music on the computer....don't know why, but Inca 'likes' Avril Lavigne, and Aztec 'likes' ABBA lol.
I have weird snakes...either that or I am lol x

I've decided he is weird as well. He was no where to be seen this afternoon, so thought I'd strum the guitar again to test the theory. Two minutes later out he pops, doesn't move, just lifts his head up. OK, so that's pretty cool as I can charm him out of his hide. Prior to this I had been to Wilcos and bought a set of 20 LED lights (battery operated) to give a bit of light to the vivarium. Later on tonight I went to check on him to see if he was out and about and there he was with his head stuck out of his hide looking at the lights...he must have stayed there for nearly ten minutes looking at them. I thought they were supposed to be crepuscular or nocturnal??? |

Posted - 10/12/2014 : 23:52:15 Thats brilliant, he will probably feel vibrations from guitar, either that or your playing is so awsome/awful he is fascinated lol |

Posted - 10/12/2014 : 23:39:24 A much better and calmer hold today. Drako took the chance to wrap his tail around my finger and just rest his head on the back of my hand
My daughter had a good hold and had one minor flinch for the whole ten minute hold. Here's a happier little shoe lace:
Whilst holding him we both noticed that he has an iridescent blue colour on the top of his head. Is this just the oils under his scales, or could it mean that he may be about to enter the shedding process?
We've also found out that he's a lover of the guitar and comes out of his hide to see what's going on almost every time lol. |

Posted - 10/12/2014 : 08:51:06 It's a shame that your daughter's first handling experience didnt go quite to plan but I'm sure you, and your daughter, will soon learn that corns like to keep their owners on their toes . I'm sure she will slowly get her confidence back as Draco settles in.
He is gorgeous by the way and great photos of him .

Posted - 09/12/2014 : 03:17:09 No I haven't tried a sock hide, but I did get her to put a piece of cloth, a bit of her old ccuddle blanket, with her teenage smell into the vivarium (poor Drako!). I don't think I could be harsh enough to put him through the ordeal of having one of her socks in there, although it would probably teach him to enjoy being out of the vivarium a bit more. |

Posted - 09/12/2014 : 00:54:11 He will soon settle, little and often handling. Have you tried a sock hide? Keep a sock with you, or your daughter if she wants to handle him more, for a couple of days and then put it in his faun as a hide. It will get him used to your/her scent. |
