so heres they set up they advised have two thermomenters in there , and the tank is bigger and well ventilated , let me know what u think :)

naa its ok , atm its all trial and error , everyone has their different ways of doing things and some prefer mats and some prefer lamps , me and my other half are new to it and so are treating it as a learning curb . the place i have been today to get some advice from had alook at my old set up which was definately wrong ( email / letter to my buyer to complain is already on its way) but this place has around three guys that have had experience in breeding / looking after corns for 20 + years . so far my readings are @ 29 in warm end and 22 in cold , the stat is set to around that too . im taking kyle down to them to double check sex , and comfirm size food he should be eating , and will most likely pick up two digi thermoms from them then (the guy said that he uses these tropical tank ones in all his set ups ) who knows , not sure on heat mat as altho will be ok for now , we have wooden viv for him to be moved into , and our house drops cold @ nite and the guy said that a heat mat wouldnt be as good . all trial and error rite now . appreiciate all of your feed back , advice and tips :) |

The faun is a much better idea and is a nice size. Once its full of foliage and a couple of hides it will be good. They like to hide and slink around their fauns while still been hidden.
I think that this shop has also spun you a line with the thermometers, I can see the type they have sold you on the lid of the faun, unfortunately they won't be accurately telling you what temperatures you have inside the snakes enclosure. (For example my living room is climate controlled to 18 degrees, if I was to stick my thermometers on the roof of my enclosures all it would tell me is that the living room is 18 degrees). The digital thermometers are best because you can read them instantly, and it makes setting up and monitoring your setup so easy and uncomplicated. To demonstrate it my corn snake vivarium is currently 27.2oC Hot end, 22.6oC cold end, and my heat mat is right now 25.8oC (don't worry too much about the readings themself, I cool to 26oC overnight and the light has just gone off just look at the accuracy), I doubt very much you would be able to tell me just by glancing accross the room what your temperatures are.
While heating with a bulb it creates a hot spot which should be around 28oC for a corn snake but its not directed into a point the snake can use and in your setup it couldn't be either so it doesn't benefit your setup at all, your snake will have an ambient temperature almost exactly the same in the hot end as it would be in the cold end. with no way of allowing your snake its requirement to thermally regulate their body temperature.
Your stat probe needs to be directly under the lamp too, hanging where it is means its doing nothing to control the heat the lamp is kicking out.
I really don't want to sound like I'm ripping your setup apart but you'll find it so much easier to run when its running well. |

Hey I had a faun for Striker like the one you have, and used a heat mat which was on the base of the full sized viv. I stood the faun inside the viv, placing it half on the mat and half off, never had any problems with the temps then there was a definate cold end and hot end for him so I would recommend a heat mat too. But nice new faun |

I would strongly recommend a heat mat - Corn snakes really don't need a light, as they don't thermo-block the heat from mats, as they are not a bulky snake. A heat mat under your faun would be perfect, and would also mean that the snake would have a more natural light-cycle, as at the moment, you are relying on that light to give the heat, and thus, you can't really turn it off!!
Also, as Lou has said, get some digital thermometers. They are soooo damn cheap, and give accurate readings - those crystal aquarium ones are actually EXTREMELY inacurate! Digital thermometers, a heat mat, and a habi-stat, you will have a perfect set up then! The heatmat can even be one that covers 1/3-1/2 of your viv there you are eventually gonna be putting him in, and then you just need place the faun in the right place to cover 1/3-1/2 of the faun! Heat mats are so much easier to track, and they will also save you a lot more stress and worry over the condition of your corn ^^ |

Ok,
You need to know the tempo inside the faun. Those thermometers are pretty useless. A digital aquarium thermometer is only a couple of qiud and idea as it will give you a very acurate reading. The probe can be placed inside the faun so you know the exact temp of the area where your snake will be living. You need to know when the temp goes too high and this is very hard to tell and often inacurate on the types you have. Using digital thermometrs does not over complicate it, infact it makes it much easier to see whats going on.
The faun shouldnt melt as you have a thermostat attached to the light to stop it getting to hot, however I have not used lamps so have no idea how hot the plastic can get when that close. Again, another reason why heatmats are normally used with fauns. |

He has one bark hide in there already btw :) I was worried about the plastic on the faun being too close to the light ? Melting problems ? He didn't mention anything about it tho . He was also shocked at the advice given by the so called "specialists" we had him from . At least this guy has bred them for 20+ years and so had his colleague I spoke to x |

The guy said not to worry about digital ones that tropical fish tank ones are fine as they have a green area that the temp should fall between . He said not to make it over conplicated . I have two thermoms at either end . I'm going to put another loo roll hide in there definately when I get back home . X |

Ok, the faun is great, I have a few.
I do have a few more questions. Are the thermometers digital, only I can't see any probes?
Im assuming you will put a few hides in there for him? Don't need anything fancy, a couple of loo roll tubes will be fine. |
