Posted - 02/05/2010 : 17:05:22 My corn snake has started to eat his own faeces - haven't taken him to the vet yet - but we are worried, as he hasn't always done this - does it mean he's missing something from his diet? We've been trying to feed him up also, as he is looking a little thin. He was also without his UV light for a while - could this have affected him badly? Thanks for any feedback! |

It really outstands me, that how a stinky poo can smell like vitamins, but theres snakes for you! I never thought mine could squirt poo all over the internal roof of his viv.. but I was wrong.
Powerade? Isn't that energy drink for people?
What ever you do don't give your snake red bull lol. |

Posted - 07/05/2010 : 13:09:14 use reptoboost - its got all the nutrients they need and will give him a bit of a pick me up, was it a reptile vet you saw or a general fluffy animal vet? |

Posted - 06/05/2010 : 20:49:29 I have never heard of giving a snake tablets before. Maybe multi-vitamin powder you put in water would be better? I'm sure someone will point you to a good one.
Good luck. |

Posted - 06/05/2010 : 20:33:56 Hi guys - so he's been to the vet - nothing clinically wrong - they say he is most likely to be missing some vitamins/minerals from his diet, so have suggested giving him a multi-vitamin tablet in every other feed - so will get hold of some and see how it goes - we need to feed him up anyway, as he is a bit on the thin side.He is quite old, so hopefully it's not that catching up with him - will update you in a couple of weeks! Thanks for all the messages tho! |

Posted - 05/05/2010 : 21:53:30 Just a thought, but if he was fed yesterday then was eating poo this morning, is it possible that his food is going through him stupidly quickly and is coming out still enough like a prey item for him to think it's a mouse. |

Posted - 05/05/2010 : 18:14:48 Please tell us what they say as I have never heard of a snake doing this. The only thing I can think of is that maybe his poo still retains some of the mousey smell. I hope he isn't eating the substrate along with his poo. |

Posted - 05/05/2010 : 17:37:49 I have been watching him eat his own poo (not a regurgetated mouse)- He has been doing it all the time in the past couple of weeks, we've had him for 9 years so I can assure you that this is new to us too!!!
He's about 5.5 feet long - we thought he looked a bit slim a couple of months ago,so have fed him up a bit - he's eating fine, only ate a mouse yesterday-but was eating poop again this morning!
We have now tracked down a snake specialist at one of our local vets and taking him in tomorrow - so will let you guys know what they say - not making this up though!!! |

Rabbits, rats and all small animals normally eat their poo as well >.< especially when they are young. |

Posted - 04/05/2010 : 11:45:53 What did the vet say Sarah?
I've never heard of it before either.
Corns also don't need UV so it'll not be that. |

Posted - 04/05/2010 : 05:51:04 I have never heard of this before Sarah and have tried searching the net about it but found nothing. I would echo SexyChef's question - have you actually seen him do it? If not then what are you basing your conclusion on?

Posted - 02/05/2010 : 17:25:36 What? I thought only mamma's did that? Are you sure he hasn't maybe spat up a mouse and then tried re-eating it? |

Posted - 02/05/2010 : 17:14:26 Personally I don't beleive this is possible...
I've never seen this happen..
It certainly isn't normal. The UV light would't have affected him. |
