Hi guys.
Long time no speak.
Anyway, things seemed to be going fine (snake is around 15 months old) and I've put him in a viv. He seemed to be doing great then the cold snap came. He seems really docile and while I think he may be shedding, it's 3 weeks since he's had anything to eat. I've got the heat mat sellotaped to the back of the viv (on the advice of the reptile 'expert') and he won't move away from it. He hasn't shed for a while and I'm certain he's going through the process, I'm worried that he's too cold or just plain poorly.
Is it unusual for them to be docile/not very responsive for such a long time (3 weeks) and not want anything to eat?
Any advice suggestions would be much appreciated.

Mark, I am so pleased that Boa (love the name by the way) has had a clean shed and is so much more active  . Unfortunately it does prove how little you can trust petshops  , and how vital forums like ours are!!
Am glad you have read the care sheet and found it helpful. If you have any other worries try checking out the search option - top right hand corner of page. If that doesnt tell you what you want to know please feel free to ask as many questions as you like  !

Thanks everyone for all your help/advice.
Boa (my sons choice honest) has shed his skin this weekend and has been all over me since.
I'm chuffed to bits I took your advice (heat mat underneath) and then followed the health fact sheet thing. Anything else I need, I'll be straight back.

lol i'm between York and Leeds, a bit south of Tadcaster. i've been into Leaping Lizards this aft actually and was VERY surprised to see their corn hatchies in 2s and 3s to a tub!
it sounds like your set-up was done by somebody more into lizards than snakes (although IMHO if they're working there they SHOULD have good knowledge about everything they stock!)
like Judith said above it's likely to temperature related although this is, in turn, related to your set-up (such as the heatmat previously positioned on the wall)

Considering that his behavior changed in last few weeks I would think that it is very likely due to the drop in temperature as winter has set in and the snow has come. Especially if his viv wasnt being heated correctly.
Would still be interested to know the temps inside the viv (which should be measured at substrate level), especially if there has been a change in them now you have changed the placing of the mat.
Hope your snake is doing better and has eaten something.

Gingerpony, I noticed you recommended a vet in Haxby (on a general advice thread/article). Do you live in York. I live in Acomb and as you seem to know about leaping Lizards, I put 2 n 2 together (and got 5 didn't I?)
Anyway, he's been in the viv for about 3/4 months now and was doing great, It only seems to have been recent weeks when he's not been very active/interested,
I've put the mat on the bottom of the viv (see advice above).
I'll keep you posted as to how he's doing.

to the OP - basically you need to get your set-up right (according to the caresheet on here) to eliminate that being the cause of your snake not eating........ |

usually i like this shop but it's i've been pretty disappointed with various advice i've heard myself in the shop and from others..........
i think they're getting too many young, inexperienced, part time staff..........

What are the temps in the viv? Would be good to have as much info as possible about snake and viv setup.

Yeah eeji, the mat's conected to a thermostat which Leaping Lizards set up for me.

move the heatmat to underneath and he should start to perk up a bit - corns absorb the heat through their undersides so its better for them to have the heatmat underneath 
nope its not unusual - corns can go for long periods without food - sometimes months so 3 weeks is nothing to worry about, he'll be fine |

The heat mate is sellotaped to the back of the viv(snake cannot make contact with it) and was advised as the best method by adviser in 'Leaping Lizards'. She actually set it up for me.
Do you think I should take it off and put it on the bottom of the viv.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
He seems to have crapped plenty so I think he's comfortably digested the mice I gave him 3 weeks ago (or I hope so). Is it unusual for them to go 3 weeks without feeding? |

the problem will be the heat mat sellotaped to the back of the viv.
heat mats don't warm the air, only things in direct contact so your snake will be too cold to digest food so won't eat.
Also, any kind of sticky tape isn't recommended for reptiles because it can do serious damage if they get caught in it. |
