Yesterday, my corn snake was just sat still for a while, then he suddenly started thumping (cant really explain) but like when you breath in and out and your belly goes in and out, it looked like that, but his whole body was doing it..

wasnt sure if he was just breathing, or gtting annoyed.

If you've only had your snake a short while, which from recollection you have.
He could still be a bit unsure, and if it was a whole body inflate, then it sounds like he was just trying to 'big himself up'. (chav snake innit!!)
Snakes do still sometimes attempt a bit of the threatening behaviour, it's in their nature. Mine still do it occasionally, but nothing ever come from it, in fact sometimes I get a long hiss thats like a drawn out sigh as well, as if they decide to try but then can't be bothered when they've already started.
