Hi I've had my corn snake 4months now. He's usually friendly, eats and sheds well. Although his last shed a few days ago he's been abit skitty when it comes to gettin him out also for the last 2/3days he's been constantly hiding underneath his water bowl??? I'm not sure why as he's normally in his vine plant. He had a large piece of bark to hide under as well as the vine and a cardboard tube. Just wondered if anyone could shed any light? Thank you also he only has a heat mat no uv tubes etc |

I totally agree with Mamma on this Kelly. It could very well be that your corn's behaviour is due to it being stressed because he can't 'get comfortable'. A thermostat and digital thermometer are vital pieces of equipment, but unfortunately all too often they aren't recommended when people buy snakes. I'm guessing your snake is a little one, so in a faunarium. It is worthwhile checking out Setting up a hatchling corn snake - My 101 to see how to get his set-up right for him.
Until you can sort out the stat and thermometer I would suggest you turn your mat off. He'll be fine without it for a short while as long as you don't feed him, he needs the extra warmth to digest properly. It's better that he misses a feed because the mat is off than have him stressed because it is too warm and risk him being burnt.

having a non statted heat mat will make it far too hot at your warm end. I tested temps on a heat mat at unstatted once and it reached 50 degrees c. Thats enough to seriously damage or kill your snake, cause bad burns and fires.
Until you sort out the temps, and importantly the stat, the snake wont be able to vary its heat safely, which may mean lack of appetite, problems digesting (again causing potentially harmful problems to your snake) etc etc. |

Nope just a heat mat, never used them for the snakes. Could pinch the one out lizards and see what the temp is. Could it be that it's too hot? As its been quite sunny here few day |
