Today I weighed Sunny-I know she's empty as she 'blessed'me and everyone else in range with a NORMOUSE POOP!
Sunny Empty:1008gms
Sunny length 180.5cm
Is that about right? She's between 2-3yrs old(that's what I was told)
Will she get any bigger?
Any chance she could be hybrid with something biggish?
I know it sounds daft but having just noticed her weird 'pits'around her face-two very pronounced ones in front of and below her nostrils.
I didn't think corns had pits? |

Thanks all,Auld B. I measured her outside by measuring where her head and tail were when she was lying along the path-I guess she's a bit longer because I didn't stretch her out properly.She has a nice taper from vent to tail,but is quite wide before the vent.
she has quite good muscle tone,and can see the 'lines'either side of her back when she's moving about.
Thanks for the heads up re:chicks-I didn't fancy the mess either before or after!
Big T. is awe inspiring Sunny is in her third year now.Does that mean next year she will be old/big enough to have a 'gentleman caller'?
would that explain why George is off his food and spends a lot of time trying to find a way out of his viv.?

At 5'9 and just over 1kg I would not be overly worried. As long as she isn't carrying any fatty hips and has an even taper from above the vent down to the tail. A large mouse is about the same as a rat fluff or small rat weaner, ~20 to 25 grams. Go by actual weight as descriptions sm/med/lge/ex-breeder vary from supplier to supplier. The last order of frozen I received had large (35 gm) mice bigger than previous ex-breeders. The ex-breeders look like baby elephants.  These will do the Kings but I'm having to dig out the smaller for the Corns and I'm spreading the feed days by an extra week.
I wouldn't bother with chicks. (Personal preference.) Stick with the small rat weaner or large mice but make it three-weekly feeding and give plenty of exercise. Up & down stairs or clambering on a climbing frame is the usual work out.
Big T is 5' and just under 1000 grams and that is after an extended fast which he's still on. You have seen the outdoor photos and can see the build of him. A couple of years ago he was 1100 but lost some over time.
Another quick question, are you measuring actual body length or going by the shed skin? |

I just had a little look at a few photos of Sunny and firstly it's a lovely looking snake but the head and lack of neck is remarkably king snakeish, now I'm no expert on morphs and hybrids but jungle corn (daft name for a hybrid) came to mind, or some other corn x king hybrid I don't know of.

The thing with rats is they have a higher fat content than mice so I've read, that might be why the larger snakes (like mine) seem to put on weight quickly if fed too often. I have my large male on one weaner rat every two weeks, which he eats no problem, but I'm thinking of stretching it out a bit longer as he's fairly thick and I don't want him getting any thicker. He went through over 8 weeks without eating a while back and was a proper loaf shape, he looked really good.
As for mice, he won't touch them so that's a no no and he also won't eat white rats, got to be dark coloured! Fussy or what! |

Just checked the size chart,and I have been giving her a rat the size of a large mouse-I'm not up to speed with what all the sizes/ages of rat are  I just trundle off to Livefoods by post,and they have every size there and I go-that one and one of them etc.
I will switch her over to mice though-I've thought about chicks-I've been told you can cut the yolk out of them and then they are a low fat food-what do you think?
Sunny is VERY active now-I think she can sniff Georgey boy,she is out every day draped round various kids,and seems to enjoy her tree/trixie table gym that I've set up.
I am thankful for your help with Sunny,I just am better getting them to eat rather than getting them to lose weight.This forum is a very good positive help-not just for the snakey side of things:I'm having to learn to use a 'puter and take pics.

I must admit to not being sure about the half-grown rat every fortnight. I'm not sure what size rat that would be, but it's probably a large or extra large. You can find out by looking at this Mouse/rat size comparison If I'm right then you would feed a normal weight adult corn that every 10 days/2 weeks, so not much different to what you're doing.
This is taken from Stapey's thread on 'Is your snake a fatty?', about her struggle to get her snake to lose weight -
'He weighed 1193g in this photo 926/05/10). He was fed large weaner rats weekly for a year as I got told by the petshop to do this and if I didn't I would be starving. He started getting fat so I dieted him to 1 weaner rat every 2 weeks, for another year, he just got fatter. I then cut him down to every 3 weeks for another yearish and every 4 for another year and he just got fatter.
He last weighed at 1049g, (21/08/10) so has lost 144g over 3 months, this is due to his new diet of 1 large mouse every 4 weeks and exercise.'
I'm wondering whether you need to change to a large mouse every 3 weeks and monitor her weight to see what happens....

aww thanks! Well,She's just gone and slipped out of her skin,and her 'nose hole'is looking as normal as anything does in this house
So now she's in 'where's me nammets' mode.To which the sad reply is NO-fatty bum-bum-snakes get 1 big item every 2 weeks
Today at Livefoods by Post our local supplier/shipper of all snakey nammets,I met another snakey like sunny same age and colour and a big un!so we figured there must be someone locally had a clutch of these beauties.Reassuring to know Sunny's not some monster freaky thing.
Do you think 1 big item every 2 weeks is better for a big girl like Sunny?
Sorry to be a worrywart about her,but I've never had to deal with a snake that needs to slim down before-usually we see the reverse problem
I've also heard that chicks are low infat so may help?

Yes-Gold Dust,so that's half rat.I guess the whole hybrid thing can make the odd big'un and she's definitely odd  .
Weight wise -I know she's a bloater,She was fed pretty much fed every 5 days,and they wanted her gone as they couldn't afford the food.She was on small stuff-pets at home med mice-about the size of big fuzzy's I call them Small mice.
With me she's had 1 half grown rat-every 2 weeks,She's active poops with gusto and as friendly and curious as kid in a sweet shop.
When I feel her 'hip area'it does feel similar to the same place on my Royals-and she has very good muscle tone.
I'm just wondering if some nutter hasn't gone and crossed a corn with one of the python/boa family????? |

She's certainly fairly long, being 5'9"....don't do cms where snakes are concerned  . It's more her weight I'd be concerned about. Kellog is approximately 5'3" and I start keeping a close eye on his weight once he hits the 800g mark. What are you feeding her on now?
Asher is x rat, we think, and so far there isn't much difference between him and Kellog, although he is younger and is already about the same size so it will be a case of seeing how much more he grows.
She does seem very long and heavy for a corn, even cross rat, of her age. And as for the 'pits', I don't have a clue!!

Wasn't it decided she was a gold dust? (Or was that a different member's snakey!). If so she is a hybrid so may well be a little bit bigger than a normal corn, but not majorly so I don't think :) |
