hey people, ive been having problems with keeping the temperature correct in a 2ft second hand setup i got cheap. first of all i tried heating the viv just using a heat mat but that would only keep a temperature of 70F so i introduced a 60W light bulb which has put the temperature right up to 88F so the question is should i get a smaller bulb or just get a thermostat?

How and where were u measuring the temp with just the mat. Even a small mat is capable of hitting 30+

Normal household bulb will be fine.

You need a thermostat whatever form of heating you use.
If you want to use the bulb I'd recommend a habistat dimming thermostat.
You'll also need a digital thermometre to keep an eye on the temps.
