Posted - 14/12/2012 : 21:44:11 So when we first got Anouk 5 months ago, we were told that he was male. This week i registered with our local reptile vet, made an appointment to get Anouk sexed and for a general look over to make sure he is in good health and that we are taking proper care of him!
The probe did not go in very far, letting the vet come to conclusion that Anouk is female!
She is 11 months old, 273grams and is 3ft long, the vet said that she looked small? i understand that snakes all develop at different rates, but does her weight and length sound ok?
She eats 2 medium mice every 10 days, fully sheds and poops with no problems! She is also nicely active and has settled in to her new 3ft vivarium without any signs of stress :-D |

Posted - 07/01/2013 : 15:56:48 My snake was a monster when she was that age too - and I saw her when she was a brand new hatchie so I know what her age was :) I've been told by my expert pet shop that my snake was too little and clearly underweight, but I took her to the vets who reassured me that she was a healthy weight and size, a lot of people get confused because coen snakes are not heavily bodied snakes and a lot of corn snakes about are often overweight :) I wouldn't worry :)

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 10:43:47 Sounds ok to me size wise. The one thing I would say is try and move her on to large every 10-14 days. Feeding two mediums at each meal is alot of fur which she is not going to use and just pass it through. If i feed two mediums thats a total weight of 40-45g if i feed a large its a weight of 30-35g. Better to feed just one large at a time in my opinion don't want a fat snake on your hands in a few months/years time :) |

Posted - 19/12/2012 : 18:01:49 Hmmm.. very concerned about your vet if she thinks Anouk is small!!! Corno is just under the 200g mark and is 15 1/2 months. Ember has just passed a year and is 56g - but then she IS small, has always been v thin and is on large fuzzies now, and I am hoping to move her up to hoppers soon.
As others have said - it could just be that she is a large snake (although more likely she is just a bit older than you've been told) Whatever she is, it's certainly not 'small' for a 1 year old!! |

Posted - 17/12/2012 : 12:21:26 It is possible she is that big at 11 months but I think its more likely shes that age maybe plus a couple more months lol. |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 22:14:30 My 3yr old is less than 200g and fed on a small every 5 days (on advice of a worker in a reptilian shop to build her weight up, she was sold as male, then 4 months later laid eggs?!) My 16 month olds weigh less than 100g and have just gone up to smalls last week! All are between 2.5-3.5 ft long, so NO WAY is Anouk small! |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 14:36:27 She sounds to be around the same age weight and size of my Lilith but lilith was powerfed if you read her records omg its scary at a month old the breeder was feeding her fuzzies at 3 months old they gave her small mice and at random intervals fed her live god knows why so since shes been with me she just gets a small mouse a week shes perfectly happy |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 14:12:11 That's huge for 11 months old Don't worry about her being small for her age....Apollo was 17g when he was 11 months old, but then he was abnormally small. |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 12:52:26 The only thing with two mediums is that it's bigger than feeding a large. I would expect an adult to be on a large every 10-14 days. It may be the reason she is so big. Aslong as she's loaf shaped its fine x |

That's good to hear thank you! i was panicking that we may have power fed her!
The vet was wearing glasses perhaps she needs a trip to specsavers! |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 12:36:12 Just also to mention that we did buy from a reptile shop and not a breeder, so perhaps she is not 11 months old! There could be a possibility that she is older! I guess there is no way of determining a snakes age?! lol |

2 mediums sounds like a lot to me. And if say she falls under the rather large side x
When we got her, we were told by the guy that apparently she has escaped for 2 weeks and had eaten a field mouse! She however was feeding on 2 pinkies when we took her home, but she was constantly active and at the advice of another corn snake owner i was told to slowly up her prey until she became more settled. Is this wrong? :-S
We do not plan to up her prey again as she seems fine.
She is also the loaf of bread shaped, so doesn't appear over weight
Any advice is greatly appreciated |

3ft yearling small, probe didn't go in far so female......what sort of vet did you go to? I may be completely out of order here but I'd question both those statements. 3ft is not small for an 11 month old snake. I understood that if a probe didn't go in far it was a male snake. Anyway, I think your snake sounds perfectly good to me and, unless you want to breed, is it really that important for you know if you've got a male or female?
Unfortunately the vet we went to is the only reptile vet (that i know of i could be wrong!) in our city.
The sex isnt important to us we are happy either way, we just wanted to know, i didnt expect the vet to use a probe (shows how much i know!) i thought there was a different method to sexing a snake! |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 10:59:22 My corn is 12 months old now and weighs 36gr. So basically Anouk is giant compared to her... I am quite amazed! |

Posted - 15/12/2012 : 09:42:19 Hm. I could do long quotes from the Kathy Love's book, there's a chapter on growth, and I will quote it , if you'd like me to. But shortly - it says that with above average devotion to feeding efforts, you can achieve 30 inches at 9 - 10 months of age - so that would put yours in the HUGE category. :-) 3 ft in under a year is quite big, Bazil's almost 2 years old and 3 ft now ( female ), and Little T's year and a half and 3 ft.
With the probe not going far in, that would be female. Males have 2 deep pockets, where the inverted hemipenis lies, so the probe goes in much deeper. But, to complicate it even more, some males can clench their muscles, and probe falsely as a female... With adult snakes, you can tell by the shape of the tail, but that's difficult with no comparison. Males tales run the same thickness for several centimeters after the vent, and sometimes you can even see a little thickening where the muscles that evert the hemipenis are. Females tales taper straight away. I can see the male shape on Little T really well, there's no doubt about what he is, which is what made me think Bazil was a female, and she probed as a female, even though her scale count was just one scale less than Little T's.
