Posted - 13/09/2012 : 12:19:27 Just a newbie question off me :) With all these hatchlings that are none feeders, and there seems to be a few about, poor little things :( people try this and that often without success, but why doesn't anyone try what they could be getting from the wild naturally ? for instance crickets and small bugs ? It's just a thought and has puzzled me why no-one has mentioned them, not to my knowledge anyway :)
I'm just really curious |

It's more of a Florida thing. Miami and Keys corns would have a lot of anolis lizards about to start feeding on. I'm not sure about the more northern corns.
I'm sure that crickets wouldn't be any good for them; not enough calcium. There are all sorts of things to try to get them feeding. Warmed, brained, tuna/salmon dipped pinkies, chick thighs, mouse tails, etc. At a push, maybe frogs?
Most of the time, it's just finding what works with each individual snake, and going from there. |

Would like to know if anyone has tried crickets, I remember reading something like that somewhere - someone's hatchling wouldn't eat, but then a cricket got into its tank, it went for it and started eating afterwards... probably not the best diet, but if it worked? |

Posted - 13/09/2012 : 15:15:19 I wonder whether they do eat insect as well, I'd imagine they'd go for anything they can get. Bazil once tried very hard to hunt a small spider that was crawling just on the outside of his faun, and I think that, given the chance, she would have eaten it, too. She was only a tiny hatchie, then. |
