Hi all,
Had the chance of an adult male okeetee with viv and the whole package to add to my collection - he's in his 7 day leave alone phase now so will post weight and pics next week. Snake is in good health but obviously overweight - very overweight! His previous owner was feeding him 4 mice per week! Anyway, decided to give him a home and work on his weight. Viv temps were all spot on and snake is great natured he is 2 years old now. Have read some threads on exercise - will be starting this ASAP but just wanted to gauge opinion on what is a safe minimum diet - was thinking about 1 mouse per fortnight to start things off and see how it goes - any suggestions?

Yeah I read stairs are good. Picture diary - good idea!

The stairs are supposed to be great for (snake) exercising (up AND down), but big is beautiful here- he looks amazing, will look even better when he loses his 'muffin top' start a picture diary?
Good luck. Xx

One thing that body builders do is gain weight then convert the weight from fat to muscle..

You design the right course and you might end up with a side show act on your hands!! lol

Snakes loose weight very very slowly

bear in mind he may take a strong dislike to the bath, many snakes do, sonny loves going for a swim and has even taken to going for one half way through dinner.

Although i think at his size a private paddling pool would be better!

U can see his love handles in second picture an omg :-o. If was mine I'd have him down on mediums every fourtnight. An fill the viv with stuff to climb up. Not nessicerally just crawl over that stuff he has to balance and grip onto.

crikey, biggun, a lot of people make cardboard tube gyms for their chunks

Cheers guys - here's some pics of when I brought him home on Saturday - he chose the chair as a suitable spot while I gave her viv a good scrub and set up. Can't really tell from the pics but he has "hips" where his tail starts. Will be weighing him next weekend once his 7 days is up but I'm guessing from holding him briefly he's over a kilo!

heres the sticky for you http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11891
i would imagine as he is only two he will still be growing so droping him down to a medium once a week would probably be ok.

Ahh, another okeetee :-) But 4 mice a week, :-0 would be interesting to know his weight...
Bear in mind ( this is according to Kathy Love book, not my experience ) that Okeetees are supposed to be " big and husky " race, but even so, I can imagine anything would end up overweight on 4 mice a week.

Looking forward to pics when ready. :-)

I think there's a sticky somewhere here on overweight snakes ( health section )? Some people on here re homed overweight snakes before, too, so they will be able to advice as well.
