Posted - 12/07/2012 : 00:09:36 Hi guys and gals this is a VERY serious post.
Its gunna be very long winded but please bear with me.
I have 2 corns and one red tailed boa.
The corns are around 4 to 5 months and the boa around 2 years as he is around 2 feet long.
The 2 corns are housed in a small plastic viv on top of the large boa viv.
The corns are housed together one is creamsicle one is amel.
After returning from holiday i realised my corns (having being looked after by me bro) has mites or equivalent?
He has a mini hedgehog and i'm wondering if it could have come from that? |

Posted - 12/07/2012 : 03:01:08 Snake mites are Snake mites.. very specialized. They didn't come from your buddy's hog. He could have got them from whatever bedding he uses for the hog but then you could have just as easily brought them in that way (with bedding)
The young(larva) form of the mites is very mobile and will infect all your snakes given the opportunity.
I was able to clear the mites that came with my Russian Rat using a water + oil (olive) bath first to knock the population down and switching the bedding to kitchen roll that I sprayed with a permethrin solution (head lice shampoo) I made following the procedure here http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/general-discussion/17014-nix-treatment-snake-mites.html ** (mods if the link is an issue please let me know and I'll remove it)
Despite the directions in the link I Never Applied the Nix + Water solution to my Animal. Only to his environment and the kitchen roll I was using as bedding.
I use tanks to house my critters and I also applied a 3cm strip of petroleum jelly around the top of the tank so the little B*stards couldn't get out and spread to my corn who was in the other half of the split tank.
It took 6 weeks of concentrated effort but they never spread and I haven't seen them since.
The most important part is breaking the life cycle of the insect, if you can consistently do that you will win. If not... mites can kill.

Posted - 12/07/2012 : 00:22:33 Not sure if the mites can come from the hedgehogs but I would suggest reading this sticky regarding mite treatment

As you are cohabiting two very young snakes I would also suggest you read this sticky

Posted - 12/07/2012 : 00:20:55 Continuation of above.....................
The mites were very visible on the Amel on one of his eye sockets but i managed to remove them by hand then i bathed him as it looks like he has one just under his eye lid?
Now i dont know if this is just dirt.
He still keeps digging which i know is a sign of their being a mite in his eye and i did bathe his several times.
He ate very well though which does confuse me although my feeding was slightly sporatical, due to my mum not wanting mice in the house, but i did take advice previously that said it would be ok.
So first of all.
Is the Amel likely to give the creamsicle the mites? They live together?
I've checked the Amel now and the only thing is the dark mark under his eye lid? I have held him and tried to carefully bathe the area to remove it if its dirt but it doesnt work. Are they a mite that has embedded itself?
I checked the creamsicle and he does not seem to have mites at all he seems very healthy although he does burrow alot.
Also can my boa get them due to close proximity although there are no signs for my boa as he is happy as larry in his new jungle enclosure i made including 2 diff water bowls.
A final question. My creamsicle is becomming much larger than the Amel???
Could this be due to poor healthor being male female etc?
I will try and post pictures later if i can.
Any comments greatly appreciated snd the sooner the better.
Tke care everyone
