Posted - 03/07/2012 : 15:43:52 I've been keeping a log of my two snakes shedding pattern and am wondering if they are growing at the right rate? They are just over ten months old now.
Everything I've read says they should shed roughly every month. However, my pair started off at every 6 weeks and it's now every 8-10 weeks. They do shed within days of each other and I have all their sheds as they have grown up.
Their last shed measured at 25 inches.
So is this the right sort of rate of growth for corn snakes? They have doubled in size, but looking through the records today highlighted their shedding rate. They are fed regularly and are moving up from fluffs to small mice over the next 6 weeks (I transition with two of the smaller size).
Is it just me being a paranoid owner? |

Posted - 03/07/2012 : 18:44:27 My newest corn is eating larger prey items than my other two did at her age , she is growing and sheding at a faster rate too, as long as your snake is active then there is not alot to worry about. Just like us humans all snakes are different. |

He is a yearling and has only recently been able to tackle a fuzzie, although I think this had something to do with being fed a maintenance diet in a petshop. Grrr. He only shed once every 3 months since he was approx 2 months old. So excited though because he is shedding again and only a month since he last shed, maybe his growth is picking up because he is on fuzzies now. Yay!
Every snake is different, some grow quicker than others. As long as your snakes are a healthy weight (loaf shaped) then however quickly it is growing is probably okay. |

They will all vary in growth rate and time between shedding. Younger snakes will shed more often. As they grow the time between will increase. It is still a good idea to keep a log of progress.
Almost everything you read regarding size, weight, shedding and feeding etc should be taken as a guide. As long as the snake is active, eating and pooping with no obvious health problems then your snake is fine. They don't run to a timetable so relax and enjoy your snakes. |
