Okay so I had to go away for a while, so left my friend and neighbour in charge of snakey. She's been around him a lot and he's pretty comfortable with her. So I fed him before I left, and he didn't poo or anything whilst I was gone, and he usually does it about 2-3 days after a feed, but I thought nothing of it. Anyway, about 9 days later, she tried to feed him and he wasn't interested (still hadn't poo'd at this point) she rang me up and asked what to do and I said to leave it as I was home at the end of the week and maybe he just wasn't hungry yet, or didn't want to take food from her.

I came back today and I've had him out for a bit, then put him in his feeding tub and tried to give him a mouse, as is routine. After a while of not taking it, I bashed the mouse head on the side a bit and sliced a tiny bit into its guts so it smelled more, food like, nothing. He couldn't have been less interested if he tried. HOWEVER he finally poo'd whilst in his feeding tub. Still didn't take the mouse though! I am a bit worried. It seems odd, as I've just had to switch where I buy my mice from, and the last two mice (the ones hes refused) are from the new shop. Do you think this is the problem? Or should I take him to a vet?

Yeah I googled Lancaster vets and I emailed a few, but the ones I emailed (including the one you found lotabob) said that they don't really have much experience with exotics, but they also reccomended me some places that do handle exotics. He's going to the vet soon but I have to wait a few days as he's just gone into shed and came out of his blue phase today! :) Please don't shout at me, I am doing my best and am not being cruel, I honestly care very much and am worried. I will let you know how it goes.

You have Google and yell.com available and your struggling to find a reptile vet? I found this one in about 3 seconds;

http://www.lancastervets.co.uk/home.html

Just searched reptile vet in Lancaster and that's the one I liked the look of the most.

If the head is swollen still it MUST be taken to a vets, not doing so is negligent and cruel, you have no clue what's causing it or the ability to treat it yourself. 5 minutes with a phone book and a phone and you could have found a vet.

It's only a small drive, but there is a pet shop in Ulverston called Little Beasties, the owner Mandy will surely know the best course of action.
They have a facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001597041721
You could post a query on there and she will usually answer quite quickly.

maybe there was a small cut and it got infected and puffed?
Auld Baldy Posted - 23/02/2012 : 19:11:52
Google "Reptile vet Lancaster" and check out the list for those nearest to you. Try the contact phone details.
You could also contact the RSPCA for any recommended specialists

It is getting to the stage that you really need to get proper advice and treatment.

Struggling to find a reptile vet where I live. Snakey is still swollen on his head/in mouth. Don't know what to do! :s

Any news on this?
emilyoblong Posted - 19/02/2012 : 12:37:43
Swelling has gone down a bit today, but is still there so will take him to a vet this week. Had a look inside his mouth, it seems to be swollen inside which might explain why he's not eating also. Will keep you all informed on whats going on, could anyone provide a picture of what a healthy corn snakes mouth should look like? Just so I can compare? Thanks XxxX
emilyoblong Posted - 18/02/2012 : 23:48:07
Thanks guys. Swelling has actually gone down again now, and he's just hiding in his hide which is pretty normal. I'll see how he is tomorrow and if swelling is still there I'll find a vet for him! :) Thank you. XxxX

Managed to find this older topic on neck swelling.

From checking other links the best thing is to take him to the vet as he might need antibiotics if it is an infection.

What size of mouse/mice did you feed him last time?
lotabob Posted - 18/02/2012 : 21:47:14
This isn't a to be safe take it to the vet situation. That is a clearly something wrong needs to see a SPECIALIST exotics vet ASAP, its got a very large swelling to the head, possibly at the back of the mouth though the pictures aren't clear enough to see. Have you opened the mouth to see if there is anything visible?
WannaCornSnakeTeen Posted - 18/02/2012 : 21:28:02
i'm not experienced at all but if it were me i'd take it to the vet just to make sure
ScalySituation Posted - 18/02/2012 : 20:34:55

not to clear, but here's a pic of the swelling. It's a lot worse now than it was this afternoon. :( Can anyone tell me what to do?? Really worried now. XxxX
emilyoblong Posted - 18/02/2012 : 18:47:59
I would but right now he's being a bit ****y and won't let me pick him up haha, I'll try again later tonight :)
Mamma Posted - 18/02/2012 : 14:59:54
can you get pictures of the swell?
emilyoblong Posted - 18/02/2012 : 14:49:47
I should also mention this morning that he has quite a bit of swelling on the sides of his head by his neck. He doesn't seem ill or in pain though he's still active as ever.
emilyoblong Posted - 18/02/2012 : 14:39:04
He is about 4 years old and about 5 ft long. I've not had him sexed so don't definitely know he's male but he has a tail like a male snake. He is very active atm, not so much in his tank but when both me and my neighbour have had him out he's a lot more active than usual, and he's usually failry active! So it's nothing too much to worry about then?
Auld Baldy Posted - 18/02/2012 : 00:22:58
Big T went 4 months with no ill effects or significant weight loss a couple of years back. Assuming your snake is mature, it is the breeding season and normal for them to ignore food, no matter what you try.

Report back with age and size for more advice.

I echo what Mamma has said. Has he been more active than usual? I would say to make sure you weigh him to get a starting weight for him and keep an eye on this during his fasting period. One of mine went off his food for 22 weeks last year and only started dropping weight in the last few weeks of that period
