Mango recently went to vets as she wasnt eating ( still isnt) and i got told i was over feeding her i thought her hard skin in places was skin left behind from her shred but am now wondering if these are scales that have turned funny because she is overweight. She had to be tube fed at vets as she isnt eating am hoping she starts soon to eat i got told she has alot of gas i love her to bits and feel really bad. Any ideas to get her to feed |

After she went to vet not before did mango start to sneeze. The vet im going to is the only one that deals wit snakes in cambridge. Heat mat only goes up to certain temp and had heatmat on since march getting stat on thurs as get paid then |

If she was sneezing and coughing then that worry even more why the vet would shove a tube down it's throat as it has a chance of causing damage! Force feeding animals with tubs is enough to send some into shock and die. Please, do not use that vet again, I'd leave a comment card or something that maybe the vet needs to do more training!
What kind of sneezing or coughing, did they find out what it was causing it? One of my snakes sneezes from time to time coming upto a shed or just after shedding, doesn't mean I would feed it! I wouldn't even feed mine if it had an IR, I'd let that pass first. |

you should really turn te mat off if you have no stat, apart from the fact its extremely dangerous i would guess it could be a reason for it not eating if its subjected to extreme heat. and only feed once a week. |

totally agree with kdlang above ^^ (when i'd finished laughing at stapey  )
the only reason i can think of for tubing is to administer medication in that way.........not that i can think of any medication a vet might want to give like that! |

To be frank, that is not a vet I would be going to see again. To put a snake through the stress of being tube fed when it has only been without eating for 3 weeks and is far from being underweight is just ridiculous and to me it seems he was more interested in the money he could get out of you than the welfare of the snake.
I would stop worrying about the snake eating at the moment and concentrate on getting her set-up right. I'm sure she will be eating well again in no time. |

and yes hatchies can go a very long time, from my own personal experience 3 months is perfectly manageable but you regularly hear of them going even longer |

Hatchlings can live months without having their first meal, so it's not because she's too young! I don't get why the vet would feed her if he though she was overweight. That's like telling a fat guy they are fat and then buying them a McDonalds, doens't make any sense! |

Yes vet was snake vet. I think cos she is so young they tube fed my heat mat is 12watt. Will get stat this week (dont get much a week) |

I too am amazed that the vet tube fed her when it has only been 3 weeks since she last ate. That is nothing in terms of corns not eating. Not only that but according to your original thread you had only tried 2 methods of getting her to eat, giving it to her and ' teasing'. The teasing is not a very good way of getting a corn to eat as it can actually stress them and put them off eating even more.
Did you get the thermostat and digital thermometer that was suggested on the previous thread?
Firstly I would make sure that your set-up is sorted out, with correct temperatures measured using the digital thermometer. Then I would leave her completely alone for a week or 2 to get over the stress, just change her water and check for poops. Then you can start to try the methods in this thread http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3720. It is important that you do not try to feed her too often, just one method once a week.
See how she gets on and keep us posted. But please don't start panicking about her not eating for a few weeks. Keep an eye on her weight and as long as she is not losing too much she will be fine. |

feeding every other day IS VERY excessive, and may be the reason she's gassy - snakes aren't designed to be continually digesting food.
it may also be the reason for her not eating now
one of our males has just taken his first 2 feeds this year (Friday and the previous friday) so not eating for a month or 2 or even more really isn't an issue, i'm also confused why the vet would syringe feed her if they thought she was overweight?
was it a specialist exotics vet that deals with snakes? ('exotics' can cover anything from guinea pigs, ferrets, lizards, torts as well as snakes and not all 'exotics vets' are snake specialists) |

Mice and was feeding every other day but has now gone of eating completly but otherwise fine, vet said to offer food after she passed stool which done earlier her stool was yellow and green. Just want her to be ok |

I Cant believe that the vet tube fed after less than a month of not eating. They can go months and months without food with no ill effect so it was totally unnecessary and stressful to the snake. I'd consider using another vet in the future.
What did you feed and how often when it was eating?
If you can post some pictures as obese snakes are easy to spot, and as above pics of these hard scales would help.
(EDIT: I just found your pictures of Mango and although not a full body shot that snakes doesn't look fat at all). |

when was the last time she fed? (Im pretty sure you had a not eating thread... its eary in the morning and im half asleep) What advice did the vet give you in reg to trying to get her to feed? I dont really know about the scales turning funny cos of obesseness... someone might be able to give you sound advice on that.
In what way are the scales funny? Do you have a picture at all of these "hard" scales?? Might give us a better idea of what's what.
