Time for another newbie question here. I play (I use the term loosely) bass guitar and while I mostly play it with some headphones on, occasionally I like to blow the dust out of the speaker so to speak.
Would this affect our corn, don't know why I think it would but I've looked around sometimes to see him poking about his viv a bit more than usual, but perhaps it's just coincidence or a case of 'post hoc' observation. |

i have full (one sided) conversations wiv all of my pets...even the fish. Ask them questions and wait for them to answer (dont know what i would do if they actually answered me). Although the chinchillas, cats and dogs "talk" back. Only sensible conversation i get lol |

Oh god poor snakes I twitter away at them all the time I thought their only saving grace was that they couldn't hear me. Though funnily I was talking to the new Gecko and it turned to look at me, I found that rather amusing I forgot they can hear in the conventional sense, the snakes never look at me when I'm talking to them. I need to get out more lol. |

And through the air, after all thats how we hear it in the first place. Snakes no doubt can interpret sounds, they can probably even hear us talking, whether they can make anything from it is highly dubious at best.
Considering a lot of people get scared with loud noises, especially ones that they dont know, it stands to reason that a snake with less intelligence than 2 short planks would be scared by it also. |

I will clarify hearing as in the collection and interpretation of sound waves in air. I know they have internal bits attached to the jaw bones that are sensitive to vibrations. Speakers do indeed send vibrations through solid objects (floors, walls etc) and that part the snake will be able to detect. So when listening to an Adele CD what we percieve as a sound not disimilar to a whale been kicked in the nuts the snake will pickk up on the vibrations and either be scared or intrigued but as above moderation, even my dog can only take so much razorlight before he screams murder. |

Yup, snakes do have ears, just not external, their ear bone is connected to their jaw, so they can 'hear' vibrations through their jaw, how this is interpretted by them is unknown, but seeing as we only distinguish vibrations in the air, there can be little doubt that snakes interpret vibrations in a similar manner.
Taking that into account, yes, snakes can hear, what they hear i cant tell you, but i can assure you that things like bass speakers pass a huge amount of vibrations into things near and far, and they WILL hear it.
I think the simple answer is do what you want, but take into account the stress it causes, and dont do it too often. |

i'd also turn large speakers so that they're not pointing in a direct line at the viv - imagine how stressed you might be in an earthquake if you didn't know wtf was going on! |

Thanks Lotabob, I thought that was the case, insofar as snake senses go, but wasn't sure if it was something on The Simpsons that was merely a plot device or not. |

Snakes have no hearing, the no ears bit is the clue but they do have the ability to sense vibration though. Two ways to react to vibrations; the 'OOH whats that' go investigate response and they 'AHHHH what is that' hide response. As long as its not music all day long then I don't think there is a problem. |

Didn't seem stressed, per se, but active.
The viv is on a bit of doorjam insulative foam and a carpet tile to keep the heat mat from overheating or marking the chest it's on top of, respectively. So the vibrations ought to be reduced some what. |

Corn snakes haven't got great hearing...so that shouldn't be a problem.
However, vibrations from the bass guitar will probably be what is making your corn react...can't imagine it being a problem unless he seems to be getting stressed by it. |

Funny you should mention this as i think our Corn comes out more when the radio is on in the bedroom, again that could be just because i happen to be in the room watching its faun lol |
