Hi everyone. My corn started shedding several weeks ago and still has about 30 percent of his shed skin still on him. I'm concerned that it's taking too long.
Some background - I got him from someone who I didn't feel was taking as good care of him as he should have. Poor temperature, inadequate feeding, minimal living environment. Two months later, he's now eating well and has a wonderful living environment that he seems to feel safe in.
Is this slow shed a result of his prior living environment? Should I use one of those shedding aides sold at my local pet store, where you add it to water and gently bathe the snake for a few minutes? Or just sit it out and let nature take its course?
He appears happy and healthy otherwise and has settled into his new life. He's eating regularly, too.

Ethan, its possibly a culmination of a few things, including the previous owner, and possibly even yourself. Now you know the snake has trouble shedding, when he goes blue, give him a moist hide, usually, you dont need to do that for corns etc, but sometimes its just a little helper.
When i say you, i dont mean you a re misstreating him, just that the humidity is probably a little low, but thats prob more down to your local area than anything else.
There are a lot of topics on here about shedding, and time frames, but to give you a quick answer, it should take about 5 minutes for a snake to shed from start to finish, sometimes its quicker, sometimes a little slower, anything over an hour, and its having problems. the skin should come off in one piece, if its in bits, then there is a hydration problem.
Have a look at some of the other threads, there are a lot that go into this specific problem, and ways of dealing with it, like bathing, wet towel etc, have a read and you can decide which one best suits your needs. |
