My mate who will not listen to me (as he thinks the local pet store knows best) has had his royal burned by an unstatted mat.
Whats annoying is that he had a stat on until the pet shop told him to take it off as it wasnt hot enough and his snake will stop eating.

I hate to say i told him so......

Take a look below

He has since sent the same pic to the pet store and the reply he got was......its blister disease!!!

STATS ARE ON THE MARKET FOR A REASON!

They also told him to put Vaseline on!!!! WTF. That keeps heat in.

Dont put Deep Heat on it either... my older sister convinced me that Deep Heat was for treating burns and got me to spray it all over my burnt hand! lol.

Showing my inexperience here but what does the stat actually do and is it only for is the mat is inside the viv?

I tested my setup yesterday ready for my snake and didn't put the stat on, just to see and the temp went up to 35c and was still climbing!!

just would like to say, as you know I am a new keeper, (yes I did have a regurge prob) but I did some research before I brought my snake. When I went to purchase my snake, I was offered a starter kit (discounted) ie, tank, heat mat, water dish etc. but no stat, this was never offered to me, but because I did some research I saw that this was a vital part of the equipment necessary, and already had everything I though was a good set up. However she is now in a lunchbox, with the digital therm and stat conected, she seems happier, so so am I.

I personally think that this particular shop doesnt have experience in snakes. He started off with beardies years ago. None of his set ups are guarded or statted! Having said that, he does have stats in the shop for sale.

I just think that if your average pet shop wonderer goes in to look, then the shop is far more likely to sell a pet reptile sub £100. So if you say £35 for a corn and all its basics if you were to add a stat your less likely to get a sale. Lots of people who go into pet stores have little or no idea of how to care for these animals, so they trust the shop as if the shop are experts. Shops will make far more profit on the animals themselves than the set ups.
and, Imagine if this shop was advising the use of thermostats and then the customer saw that the shop itself wasnt using them, what would they say.
Its only when people visit forums like this that they realise just how bad SOME/MOST pet stores are.

They get more money and we get a safe snake. Win win.

That is my thinking too. They would also have less people going back to them and saying "my snake got burnt" just doesn't make sense. Plus with how many different animals you can use heatmats with, and with the different temperatures they require, it kinda seems like common sense that something to control the temp is needed. I know that petshops seem to push the sales of multiple animals and super expensive vivs, I'm guessing as once they are gone, there is more room, stats don't take up much room :(

That look's horrible =/ will it leave any scarring?

Awwww that poor snakie. Sounds to me like the shop doesnt care no matter what. Hopefully now your friend realises what idiots the shop owners are and will let everyone else know. Word of mouth works really well sometimes. Some shops also have listings on yell.com and other such sites, and I'm sure you can put reviews on some of them. Might be worthwhile him trying to do a few of those.

i was going to suggest them! How are they still in business?
drchino Posted - 03/12/2010 : 16:39:41
Not to worry, found one from surrey pet supplies for £20 :)

I need to get my crestie matted and statted now the weathers got colder. Anyone know anywhere I can get a dirt cheap stat? Money is a bit tight at the mo and I'd love to find something for under £25.
Invalid User Posted - 03/12/2010 : 11:33:05
Thanks to this forum I know all about stats for heat mats and have got mine all ready for my snake and also have a digi thermometer as well to make sure the temp is correct.

That poor snake. I hope it heals up quickly, that really does look sore :o(

Its so annoying how many people supposedly 'know' what they are talking about and give out the wrong information. I hope the Royal recovers quickly and the local pet store learn a valuable lesson and get naming and shaming if they don't.

For anyone currently without a stat it costs about £45 for the expensive stats £25 for the simple yet quite adequate ones. They are mainly there as a precaution against the pictures you see above, but don't forget they can also get so hot they melt and burn. Taking the unnecessary suffering of your snake out of the equation just looking at financial benefits, Most vets will charge about £20 just to look at your injured snake add on the treatments etc and a stat really isn't a waste of money.

I think they said that to stop my mate kicking off. Afterall it was them that told him to turn the stat off.
They also told him to put Vaseline on!!!! WTF. That keeps heat in!

Oh no,poor thing
Hope he recovers in time. Can't believe they said that!!

Does the petshop realise that it might be a bit offensive to say that the snake has blister disease? xD
