WORMS IN SNAKES.  I'm waiting for patrick to poop so I can take a sample to the vets as they are going to test it for worms because of his symptoms. Does anyone have any experience of a corn with worms? What were the snakes symptoms? Patricks symptoms have been posted previously on this forum so i'm sure you will know his symptoms without me going into detail on this one. They just dont poop when you want them to! |

What you have to consider is the slug killer situation, when you are giving mice worming meds, this will be passed on to the snake in a lot of cases, if this happens too often who knows what could happen to the snake. PLUS mice would more than likely double in price, because we would be paying for those meds by buying the mice.
And Heatseeker872591 I agree with you about all 3 of your points, many people are asking for trouble in not being careful about such things and it is so sad. :(
Worms are such horrible little things, no matter what creature they are infesting, but it seems to me that out of the animals I know about snakes have it the worst as far as snakes go. :/ Poor little things.

staple, it would be a very good idea for the suppliers of the mice to have them all wormed, but lets get a grip they are not going to pay for medicine treatment for each and every mouse they kill for the pet feeder industry.
all i can say is makesure you get your frozen mice from a reputable shop etc and not go into the unknown, touch wood none of my corn snakes have every gotten internal parasites, but once taken on 2 rat snakes in the past that have come already infested with parasites, but nothing has ever caught parasites in my care. i say 1 : get your mice from a reputable shop. 2: clean your vivariums when they need cleaning and 3: dont house your corns together unless it is for breeding, people who do this are asking for problems such as parasites and snakes are not sociable animals anyway they are all solitary in the wild so..... |

A bit off track but would it even be safe to worm mice? Presuming this is the only real way that snake's can get parasites? With how short their lives are for feeders generally, would it be safe for snake's to eat wormed mice?

My miami female had 2 types of internal "parasite" (I think one of them was a worm species.) anyway, I got her in an emaciated condition, with very runny fecal matter containing undigested "parts" of her dinner- a whole skull and a shoulder blade once! She also regurgitaed quite often.
She was treated with 2 different medications and is 10x better. |

YES, freezing kills the eggs.if the eggs are in an enviorment where it starts getting too cold(or hot) then it can settle in that enviroment. BUT if u put em in the freezer then the coldness is so sudden that the eggs cant Wprotect" itself, and die.
Wrong, freezing does not kill all eggs, some types of worms do die at sub zero temps, however, not all of them.
Heat Seeker, by doing all your husbandry properly you minimise the risks, you can never negate all the risks, which is why you always need to keep an eye on things, always checking, so you can make sure you catch any problems early on. |

Well his rather gross specimen that he produced for me has been examined and no worms or eggs have been found BUT the vet said he could still have worms or worm eggs as they can take a while to pass through. Apparently some worms release eggs every few days so will not necessarily be present in every poo the snake does. I have been advised to worm him anyway then wait 3-4 weeks and see if there is improvemnet with his pooing. I do have another theory on patricks problems please see the post I made starting WARNING. My other snakes show no symptoms of worms at present but I do wonder whether I should as a precaution every 6 months, though I often think don't try and fix something that is not broken. |

but my question is how on earth can a snake get worms if it has eaten frozen thawed rodents all its life, as when you freeze a rodent it kills all the worms and stuff inside the rodent aswell? beats me but im just glad my 2 snakes are as healthy as they come. |

i know the symptoms of fluke or flaggeltie worms, and i had it when i tried to take on rat snakes, i had 2 rat snakes previously, my grey rat snake was actually diagnosed with it with a poo sample, but his symptoms was pooing every 24hrs regardless of when he last eaten, and it isnt a lot of poo but very unusual looking and almost like diorhea, and my 2nd rat snake came with a similar condition pooing every 24 hrs but with blood in it this time, i took him back to the reptile shop as soon as and got my money back didnt mess about with vet trips with that one. in the end i went back to just keeping corn snakes as they seem the most hardiest |

the main symptom of worms is mega rapid weight loss. They also go off their food, you have already made the right descision, its just waiting for the results thats the pain. |
