First I will give you some info.I have an adult corn which i have very limited background info on. He is 4-5ft long. For the past 2 years he has lived in the wrong temps as high as 42 c and had a basking lamp and a uv light both on for 11 hours every day. He is aggressive so the previous owner handled him by "grasping firmly behind his head and he then constricts your arm" is what he told me. He is terrified of people, freezing when he sees someone moving or shooting backwards. Over the last couple of weeks he is becoming more relaxed when he sees us as long as we are a distance away from the viv. He ate on thursday night and I have seen him drink and he moves backwards and forward from the warm to the cool hide. I have noticed that he keeps passing small bits of poop about 1" long and as round as a slim pencil he also seems to be passing a small amount of blood with it. There is no obvious sign of constipation no swelling round the vent and he is alert. He occasionally sits with his tail slightly up in the air. Any suggestions as to what is causing this or has anybody else experienced the same with their snake? Please don't jump down my throat and shout vets, I know this.

testing in house is good, but they cant test for anything else other than worms generally, they can only 'look' at it, they cant analyze it at all.
See how the visual goes, if nothing comes up then you might need to have it sent to a lab for a full test.

Well I have found a vet quite close who will do a faecal test for Patrick in house at a cost of just £12! So now I am just waiting for Patrick to do his bit. I do not drive so I have asked my sister to be on standby for taking the sample to the vets for me. She said she has been asked to transport strange things before but this is the strangest. I told her I am giving her something that she will remember for the rest of her life. Don't think she sees it that way though!

I cant offer advice but well done for rescuing that poor snake and good luck nursing him back to health. It annoys me so much to think people are cruel to animals of any kind but then the balance is that there are good people like you prepared to put the work in to help them back to happiness. Good luck and keep us all posted on its progress.

Definitely phone around for a good vet and check prices for a fecal test. When I first got my Rankins Dragon I wanted a fecal float test to check for parasites - the ones who sent samples out of house for testing were quoting up to £50. The one that did it in-house charged £8 and knew what they were talking about when it came to exotics. Good luck.

I got the snake on the 23 sepetember and I was told that he had eaten an xl weaner rat on the 17 sept. They said that was what they had been feeding him on for the last 18 months 1 every 10 days. Apparently the snake won't touch mice. Well I offered a small weaner rat and he refused. So I offered him a medium mouse 2 weeks later at night in viv covered with blanket and he ate. The reason I'm thinking worms of some sort is I would expect the snake to be alot fatter having been fed xl weaners rats for 18 months. He is on the skinny side, you can see his back bone. And also the passing of small amounts of poop every 3 days or so with blood in it. I was told that he pooped fine and last went on the 22 sep, the day before i got him. But to be honest I don't believe a word that they said. Previous posts that were placed on a forum contradicts what they said to my face! The snake seems O K in him self but I know that means nothing. I think he has possibly lived in the shocking conditions since before his previous owner as they were mates.

just curious, what makes you think it might have worms? is there anything specific or is it just the shocking husbandry of the previous owner that's causing alarm bells?

personally i'd leave it in an enclosure that's on the small side, that's in a quiet location and do nothing but feed, water and spot clean for a month. good on you for taking it on though

some surgeries will do a faecal egg count in house, other will send the sample off to whichever lab they use. it's worth giving your local vet and nearest exotics vet a call to find out if they are able to do it. if it's for anything other than an egg count it's highly likely to have to go through a vet ie. taking the snake in for a consult too.
i think Westgate do FECs on samples recieved through the post but again, won't do more than that for the general public.

Can anyone tell me as to whether I would just be able to take a sample into our vets for testing rather than having to take the actual snake? Would the vet have to send the sample away or would the vet be able to look at it under a microscope in surgery and see if worms are present? The snake is extremely scared and I don't want to cause him more stress by having to handle him at the moment. Also would any vet be able to tell if worms were present? May sound silly but I don't think my local vet has much contact with snakes we live in a small village where most people cringe when I mention I have 4 snakes.lol

I am pleased to hear you have rescued this snake from what sounds like a neglectful owner. Sad to hear he is having problems with his stools. Not sure I can comment as to why, all I can say is good luck and all the best

if he's been kept at temperatures as high as that then my first suspicions would be some damage to his vent. Other possible causes that could also explain the over regular small bloody poos is internal parasites.
I think a vets visit is definitely the best bet in this case for a check over and also take a faecal sample so that can be examined for any parasites.

Regular temperatures that high can also cause neurological damage too, more so if he's not had anywhere cooler to escape to.

Well done for taking this fella on, I hope everything works out well - keep us posted how you get on :)
