Posted - 29/09/2010 : 19:04:28 I've got one female Carolina Corn Snake atm... The genetics give on her was vague if anything... mother is a normal, father is a caramel.
I'd love to breed her eventually, and I've looked at some pages on genetics on these guys, but can't seem to wrap my head around it, heh.
If I'm right I'm thinking that she's het for Caramel because she would be carrying the trait from her father. Let's say hypothetically, that I bred her to a male Caramel (for purposes of easy math, let's just say it's cc and not carrying any other traits), then would half of the babies be Normal, Het for Caramel and half be Caramel?
Now if the male was also het for Motley, then my logic is half would be Caramel, with 50% chance to be het for Motley, and half would be Normal, het for Caramel with a 50% chance to be het for Motley.
The Motley trait is kind of confusing as I've seen Sunglow Motleys, Striped Motleys, Caramel Motleys, etc... (as well as with stripes) so eventually if I'm breeding Caramels het for Motley I'll eventually get a homozygous double trait?
Been awhile since I've been in school and studied biology, but hopefully I'm not completely wrong on this. I'm not going to even begin to ask about the hybrids until I can understand the beginner stuff, heh.
Thanks for any help, and by the way... my corn is only 2 months old right now, so it'll be quite some time until I'm ready, and she's ready, for breeding |

Posted - 30/09/2010 : 20:23:45 your girl is het caramel because her father has no 'normal-not-caramel' gene to pass down.
if a het is bred to a non carrier then all babies will be 50% possible het. If both parents are het then each would be 66% possible het.
motley is a simple recessive morph so it is inheritable and predictable just as caramel is (except when motley and stripe come together - another story....) so eventually if you breed the right snakes you would get caramel motley |

Although can a corn still be het for the motley pattern? |

Bred to a homo caramel each egg will have a 50% chance of being either caramel or het caramel.
Im not too sure on the motley though, i think each snake would have a 50% chance of being het motley, but somebody else will need to confirm that as i may be completely wrong. |

slight edit, motley is a pattern and not really a morph so if you do get caramel motley they are still single trait morphs. |
