We were so excited whilst we were away to visit the New Forest reptile centre, and actually got to see a smooth snake, Britain's rarest snake. (We also saw an adder but we see those and grass snakes around where we live so were not so excited about them  ). We told one of the keepers there that we were just about to give up and leave, so he came over and obviously knew exactly where to look and pointed one out to us... at which point it started moving around it's enclosure and came right up to where we were at the edge. So chuffed! 
We also saw a natterjack toad and some common lizards (this poor one had obviously regrown it's tail at some point, and also lost a back foot). Unfortunately didn't get to see the sand lizards.

Aw lucky you, that's a gorgeous looking snake!! I've only ever seen one grass snake so I'm jealous haha. |

it's all good info, I appreciate it  We will be staying on hayling island so not sure how far longleat and cheddar are from there but I will look. Peppa pig world is on the list for definate and a day in the new forest also and I will look into a few other things to fill the week |

hopefully the weather will be wrong, they can't forecast the next day right let alone over a week away
Tell me about it, we had the laptop with us so were checking weather reports etc, and one evening they were forecasting rain all day the following day - it had passed over us by 10am lol!
They also put on displays at the science place, but we had already booked tickets for a planetarium show at the same time so didn't get to see it. IIRC they were at 11.30am and 2.30pm on the day we went.
Will you be going to Longleat as well? We had a great day there (and Cheddar Gorge another day on their combo ticket) - went on a day when the weather was supposed to rain all morning and hot all afternoon - perfect as it kept the crowds down again and it didn't even rain that much lol! Spent the morning doing the safari so didn't matter if it rained, and later on in the adventure park. Unfortunately the deadly 60 bit in the adventure park was closed due to 'technical difficulties' which was a bit of a bummer, but enjoyed the CD to listen to as we went around the safari and the kids got their activity booklets (take a couple of pens if you go - we had to buy longleat ones as we didn't have any with us)

We didn't really do any other herping Donnie... but considering we couldn't find a snake in the enclosure where we knew there were 3, I don't think we'd have had much luck elsewhere anyway
Do you have kids or just adults going? If kids and you get a wet day and are into sciencey stuff I would HIGHLY recommend the Intech science centre and planetarium in Winchester, it's what we did when it rained and the kids loved doing all the experiments. Luckily we got there quite early as it got really busy later on.
yes we have kids and looking at the weather there will be a couple of rainy days so I will look into that place (hopefully the weather will be wrong, they can't forecast the next day right let alone over a week away  ) |

What a lucky duck you are to spy him
Never seen any wild snakes or lizards around here... I dont suppose they'd last long with Mr. Heron or the foxes, mind. |

Moppet, when we had first moved in the house had a kind of passageway on one side but the outer door was broken. Come spring we kept finding loads of baby toads down there which we had to keep setting free again... one time I came across a grass snake which had obviously come in on the hunt for the toads! This was long before we knew much about snakes so I was very careful to check it was a grass snake and not an adder before catching it and releasing it again

Great find, I hope we are so lucky next week when we visit the new forest. Any "better" areas to visit for herping? |

Wow, that's so cool I've not managed to see any of the native snakes yet, although I did catch the sand lizards out and about at Chester Zoo |

That is amazing, and the only wild adder i have ever seen had to be rescued out of the old folks home, i was walking past and asked what was in the tub, so pretty |
