Posted - 19/12/2012 : 10:33:04 Well both my mantids moulted within an hour if each other at the weekend :) Lara grew nearly half an inch and has out grown fruit flies ( which I have 10 cultures if!) and when I got croft she as missing a back leg and sat wonky. She didn't grow much with this moult but did grow her leg back :) it's about 10% smaller than it should be but get next moult should sort that out :) luckily she still eats fruit flies but on 3 it so every other day! (Dart frog on order! Our key to eat the flies ;))
Lara before
Lara after
Croft before you can see she's missing her back right leg making her sit wonky

Posted - 19/12/2012 : 16:04:05 I have managed to breed my own fruit flies. Although Lara has outgrown them and us having crickets until my bluebottles hatch. Cruft will be in fruit flies until nearly fully grown. Then will eat bluebottles
Size wise. Lara is a giant rain forest mantis and could get upto 10 cm Croft will grown between 5-6 cm.
They can live just over a year. Heat and food supply factor greatly. I keep my two at 26 degrees but my new one needs to be kept at 34 degrees :)
Fruit flies you can normally order from your local rep store. And there are loads if guides online in how to culture them.
Some are harder than others to care for, shop normally stick the easy ones. |

Posted - 19/12/2012 : 15:45:51 Cool Georgina. How long do they live for and what sizes do they get to? So many questions. The kids keep asking for another pet and am thinking of these or a millipede. What are they like to keep and where do you source the food from? |
