Posted - 13/10/2013 : 19:25:00 Me and my family were thinking of getting a tortoise. I know they need a lot of care and attention but don't know exactly what they need. Some questions: What's the best species to keep? What price range would it be for the animal and the complete set-up? Is it best to keep them outside? Are they sociable (do you need more than one)?
Thanks!

Posted - 16/10/2013 : 12:23:26 You won't be sorry they are brilliant, mine's a little Horsefield they are the only ones that don't need a CITES certificate, my little one lives on a table not a viv. I paid £88.00 for him as a baby 3 years ago plus £129.00 for the table and starter kit which included the heat/uvb lamp and holder and a thermostat plus 2 digital thermometers on top of that you will need substrate according to which species you go for mine is on sterile topsoil/play sand 75/25 mix, I also have a small heatmat inside his bedroom on his table as I don't want to hibernate him. You will also need food/water bowls plus a tortoise bath to wallow in plus various hides and plants, calcium powder and tortoise vitamin powder to sprinkle on the food. They can go outside during the spring, summer and start of autumn but only if it is warm, I would never leave one out overnight because of preditors, horsefields dig and climb so a secure area would be needed or a large run. I can't answer for other species but horsefields like to be on their own and can be territorial definitely only 1 male should be kept but you could keep females together but you would have to make sure you could separate them if needed. Finally register with a specialist reptile vet. p.s. they are unbelievably friendly and love interaction with family members. |
