Posted - 03/10/2013 : 14:08:16 Eww yuck. Was convinced by the lady at the shop to try black crickets as well as locusts, so as to give a more varied diet. I'm struggling with the thought of them, especially after hearing they bite!!! Not so sure i'm gona cope well with these things.....
Slightly worried they're gona escape and eat me/my OH/Masuka lol.
Does anyone else deal with these? Are they really that much worse than locusts? (Which i actually don't mind so much now!) |

Posted - 04/10/2013 : 19:00:31 It was lovely! Yeah he's still a bit jumpy but had made so much more improvement than I thought in just a couple of weeks!
Fleas haha! No idea how high they can jump eeek. I'll be popping mines in the fridge tonight for half hour before giving to Masuka. I hope not to see them jump unless it's in the viv before he eats them haha! |

Posted - 04/10/2013 : 16:22:10 *shudders* Yeugh. Well, my crickets are here and they're tiny! More like fleas...whoops! Hopefully my cresties will still understand they are food, if not I'll have to wait for them to grow. How high can crickets jump? I guess it depends on size of the crickets...?
Aww bless, Masuka sounds like he's settling in really well. |

Posted - 04/10/2013 : 12:09:47 Thanks! Yeah i thought i'd leave him since he'd just shed, found him in his moist hide all nice and bright!
Was nice to get a little handle, and this morning he plonked himself on my hand and lay down, just watching me <3 very cute! He seems to be more active early morning than any other time |

Posted - 04/10/2013 : 10:23:21 If it makes you feel any better Moppet of all the times I've dealt with crickets at work I've only been bitten once, up until then I didn't realize they could bite! Locusts are easier to deal with as they get bigger, the little ones are hoppie little buggers. Glad you got a little handling in Freddiesmum, Jeff usually doesn't eat much if anything on the day he has shed I have noticed with him he might be uninterested in food a few days before too. |

Posted - 04/10/2013 : 07:01:12 From what I've read the brown ones jump higher and are faster (fridge should solve that for transferring to viv though) but are less aggressive than black ones, although yeah they can bite.
It gets easier, I hated locusts at first, don't mind them at all now really! Didn't attempt crix lastnight as he'd just shed and have heard this can fill them up. So tonight is the night eeeek! Got about a 10second handle of him though which was nice |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 22:51:13 They bite too?!
I've just tried to overcome my dislike of bugs and ordered some tiny brown crickets for my two cresties. As if I needed more reasons not to like them :S |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 17:29:18 nothing wrong with tong feeding although they can get a bit lazy. I don't keep any crickets as neither Jeff or me like them. The silent crickets are only silent until they grow wings then they are noisy little blighters! I am planing on getting some dubias and starting a colony. At the minuet I feed locusts, mealies, wax worms and they have just finished off some silk worms. Jeff has also had calci worms before too. I am waiting for my wax worm project to become established before I try offering a few of the moths |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 17:17:52 Ebay really haha! Interesting thanks!
Yeah I'll try tonight with a locust. Tong feed him first one so he knows it's food time, then let one go and see how he does
Just don't want him being bitten really! I'm sure in a month or 2 time I'll have calmed right down, I did with the snakies! |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 17:09:03 You could let one loose and see if he gets it, like everything it's trial and error. You can buy roaches off eBay too. |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 16:53:06 I have heard about locusts biting/able to hurt with jumping legs, but not quite as aggressive. Which is why I never leave any in the viv unless I'm there to supervise. I'm actually being over paranoid and have been tong feeding him so far - is this bad?
Yeah I'm gona try dubia roaches. No where near me does them yet, so I'm gona order some when I run out of locusts and crix, work never noticed I had 2 boxes of bugs with me today so they'll just have to deal with some roaches in the office for a few hours haha! |

Posted - 03/10/2013 : 16:48:39 They're much prettier than crickets that's for sure! But locusts can hurt you too ya know... If anything you want Brown crickets because they're the silent ones, black ones make all the chirps =/ Kira will not touch crickets at all, so she has mealies, supers and dubai roaches. There are other critters you can get though, look online and thensee if the pet shop you generally use can get them. |
