I popped my hand in masukas viv to change water, check mealworms etc and was chatting to him to get him used to me, all went well (he came out his hide a little to have a sniff) till I realised he'd pooed in his hide. Obv can't leave poo there so slowly lifted it up, he was wagging his tail like mad, and when I took the hide out the viv he screamed at me

I feel awful he must have been terrified but I couldn't leave the poo there!

So now I'm wondering what on earth will I do if I pop in a cricket or 2 and he doesn't eat one - I know ill have to get it out the viv but how am I going to manage to catch it without scaring poor Masuka?!

I was going to put a couple in tonight but I don't want to stress him out any further.

SB he never does it when I ready to record! I'll have to try with the newbies once they are settled!

Hmm... so where are the videos of this behaviour then Lou - not impressed you haven't been filming them for us :P

Awww, glad he came out to meet you again, must have forgiven you lol :D
Freddiesmum Posted - 24/09/2013 : 11:42:12
Not heard the chitter yet hehe!
lupi lou Posted - 24/09/2013 : 11:25:53
They can chitter too SB, Jeff's quite happy to chitter away and tell me off if I offend him! The little Tremper girl is a chitterer too!

Thanks Smartbunny! I'm so glad I knew, it's very unsettling hearing them scream! Sounded in such distress, but he was just warning me off.

I was changing water etc this morning and put my hand flat at the front of the hide, he came out to say hello so he can't be too traumatised lol! Made me feel alot better to see his little face, without scaring him!
smart bunny Posted - 24/09/2013 : 10:57:53
I didn't know they could scream :O Lucky you knew in advance lol. Hope he settles in OK :)
Freddiesmum Posted - 24/09/2013 : 08:23:03
That's a good idea. I'll try that if he starts going there all the time.

Yeah haven't left crickets in, just a wee bowl mealworms for him. If there are any crickets I put in he doesn't eat, , I'll always take them out

You can try putting a piece of kitchen roll under the hide he's pooing in and when he's been move the paper with the poo still on it to another place where you want him to go leave it there for a couple of days and he might start going there instead.

I'd just leave him be for a few days until he's settled also I wouldn't leave crickets in with him while he's settling in as they can and do nip.

Freddiesmum Posted - 23/09/2013 : 21:08:46
Oh no lol! He has another hide he can go too, I need to get another but will pop in a wee cardboard box or something to he has another two to choose from!

He hasn't pooed today (i can't smell it anyway -should i lift the hide to see? Hes still in it) and hasn't eaten either, but he has def had some calcium (there were tracks this morning!) But the breeder assured me not to worry just yet he's just settling in.

It's good to hear I'm not the only one whose gecko has had a wee scream at them! Poor wee sausage can't wait till he's settled in and feeling more comfortable

Hi if he pooed in his hide then that is the place he has chosen to use as his loo and he will continue to go there, can you pop another hide in for him so that he has somewhere to hide away if he wants to then you should be able to spot clean daily without upsetting him too much, and don't worry about the screaming my Tripod used to gape and scream when he was a baby but they do grow out of it and maybe he screamed because you disturbed him while he was going to the loo so maybe he felt a bit exposed.

Glad it's not just me lupi lou! Oooh new additions

SVH -I'm glad I knew about it, if I hadn't I would have had a heart attack lol!

SBB - yep, patience is the key!

dont worry about it,although easier said than done. just needs to get used to you is all
ScaryVonHayleystine Posted - 23/09/2013 : 00:37:33
I didnt know leo's could scream. sounds freaky :s
lupi lou Posted - 22/09/2013 : 20:37:20
When they are young they are quite vocal, Jeff used to fly out of his hide hissing at me! Just give him some time to get used to you, but still carry on doing the routine stuff. Am going to try the sock trick with my two newbies to see if that helps them get used to me, I'll let you know how that goes.
Freddiesmum Posted - 22/09/2013 : 20:29:29
Thanks , here's hoping!
Moppet Posted - 22/09/2013 : 19:46:04
Yeah, definitely a good sign. Fingers crossed he eats his crickets for you
Freddiesmum Posted - 22/09/2013 : 19:39:57
Yeah I have tongs, I'll use them and hope he's in his hide if I need to fetch any.

I know he'll take a while to settle, just felt awful when I heard him screaming!

On the upside though it was good he popped his head out to investigate my hand instead of run away!

Moppet Posted - 22/09/2013 : 19:18:48
I think that for necessary care he'll just have to learn to accept it. Do you have tongs? That would possibly be less frightening for catching crickets than by hand.
