So crickets, locusts, dubia roaches and the like - where do you house them?

I've heard of 'cricket keepers', however I've also heard that they aren't very escape proof!

I like the way you think

I have just bred my first lot of mealies and am attempting wax and silk worms, Jeff has also decided that he isn't that bother with roaches otherwise I would have bred them too. Its quite interesting seeing each phase of development although I might need more lizards just to eat all the bugs I have bred....

I'm def thinking about breeding in the future, keep costs down!

Agreed SBB, love roaches, don't smell, quiet, can't escape, lovely little critters. I'm breeding mine cos their too expensive to buy and trying to get all the geckos on to them, so hopefully eventually I can reduce the amount of crickets kept and maybe eventually get rid altogether... bliss, hate them.

my dubia roaches are are in a big tub, they dont need it to be so big, its just what i had, love them as they quiet and dont escape

Its a pet faun/ carrier can't remember if i got it from P@H or the range. Mine live in the dining room think id be in trouble if i kept them in the fridge, plus am breeding meal worm's so i just keep them at room temp

Lol! I have a free drawer in the fridge that could be used for bugs. Glad the OH is understanding.....mice in the freezer, bugs in the fridge haha!
serena_08 Posted - 05/09/2013 : 12:12:00
Bang em all in the fridge, they last a bit longer lol.
Freddiesmum Posted - 05/09/2013 : 12:06:11
Ahhh, so is that like a faunarium or is that the kricket keeper?

Very handy tip about the fridge!

I'm getting a pet leopard gecko AND some pet bugs haha!

This is how I've got my locusts set up, I use the dish cloth to stop them getting onto the lid and jumping out when I open it:

My meal worms I keep in the tub they come in, I usually remove the bran and put in fresh porridge oats and food. I don't have crickets any more as Jeff went off them and I hated them too. I do have a hint for the micro crickets though, put them in the fridge for a few minuets before you feed it slows them down and makes them easier to catch

I've only just started looking into it, so wouldn't want to give you any wrong info! From what i have seen it doesn't seem overly complicated though
rubi Posted - 05/09/2013 : 11:29:25
I buy mine and keep in a cricket keeper, i keep crickets and hoppers in there and they are fine. Ive not had any escape from it. however, i do find alot of them die. I may look into breeding them...do you know anythign about it how easy etc?
Freddiesmum Posted - 05/09/2013 : 11:25:44
How about if you aren't breeding (just buying from shop when needed)? Still the same?

I probably will just breed at some point, but to start with just be buying. (Get the OH used to living with bugs...and myself haha!)

I have the tall 24ltr RUB's for my crickets and dubias, with small holes in the lid. Dubias can't climb the sides and you can have egg carton flats placed vertically in their to make a load of hide holes. Crickets can't jump that high so long as the stuff in the bottom aint stacked to high. And I gave up on locusts they do my head in, cause they can climb anything and jump any distance lol.
