Posted - 18/07/2013 : 00:28:23 Apparently for him going very dark (almost black) is a good indicator that he will shed soon.
Still no signs from Hera but as she ate last time I offered I'm slightly less worried.
Zeus is shedding right now and definitely isn't shy. He's having trouble though bless him, it's all coming off in little bits so I've dampened his kitchen roll (that's his substrate whilst he's tiny) and he chose to be handled so I laid a piece of damp kitchen roll over my hand whilst he slithered about for a bit. Hopefully that'll be enough help for him to finish on his own. When he's a bit bigger and can go into a RUB I'll give him a mini moist hide so that he has the option but there just isn't anything small enough to put in a cricket tub
I can't believe how friendly he is, completely fearless despite his tiny size.
I weighed both the mini snakes today, Hera weighs 5g and Zeus is a massive 7g.
Hera is so nervous, I handled her to clean her out as house snakes seem to produce an incredible amount of poop for their size. She very nearly got away from me, she's so fast! Once she's eating reliably I'll have to start handling her little and often to calm her down.
Anyway, essay over. I was just so excited, particularly by Zeus. He's an awesome little guy and I hope he completes his shed okay |

I don't think there is space to put anything else in the cricket tub, water bowl and half a toilet roll hide and it's full. I wanted them to have a temp gradient whilst being able to hide so put full length toilet roll tubes in.
blackcat - I will be moving Zeus up to a RUB quite soon I think, he's growing super fast and with enough cover I think he would be okay. I just don't want to put him off eating by stressing him out. He's a fab eater but Hera is not good at all. She's refused 3 times and eaten once whilst Zeus has eaten all 4 times. I won't be putting her up until she's more confident and bigger.
Thanks for positive comments about the tail tip, I was so relieved that I didn't have to help him, it's sooooooo tiny. |

Posted - 19/07/2013 : 10:51:23 I know Zeus and Hera are tiny, but Hoggle was only 10g when I got him and I put him straight into a 5L RUB from his cricket tub. I wanted to be able to put stuff in for him to explore, which just wasn't possible in his cricket tub, it also meant I was able to add the moist hide after he had an awful first shed. They grow so fast, Hoggle is now 15g and probably more because I haven't weighed him recently. So pleased he got his own tail tip off, it was stressful for me trying to gently assist Hoggle with his. |

Posted - 18/07/2013 : 17:41:58 Got up this morning and although he completely trashed his cricket tub, he had gotten the rest off, even tail tip was good Super shiney and seriously gorgeous now (ahem, I may be a little biased). I will put a pic or two up of him in all his (teeny tiny) glory in a bit.
Thanks blackcat and Hayley
Smartbunny - my research said the same thing as yours but like I said, there just isn't anything small enough for a cricket tub. When he goes into a RUB I'll do the same as you and blackcat do with the tiny locklid tub moist hide I think they'd be a bit lost in a RUB at the moment. They could almost live in a mini lock lid tub haha. Yeah, they're really quite diddy. Although Zeus in particular looks visibly bigger since I got him. He's already eaten three times which has doubled the number of meals he has ever eaten
SBB - yeah, huge huh?

Posted - 18/07/2013 : 11:18:47 Aww yay for Zeus shedding, hope he gets it off OK! From my research they are supposed to have a damp hide available at all times (I know you can't fit one in at the moment, I'm not having a go at you, and I think dampening the kitchen roll was a great idea). I did the same as Blackcat, got a set of tiny cliplock-type tubs from the pound shop, and hubby found a lighter and just melted a hole in the lid so there were no rough edges etc.
5 and 7g wow, that is just mind-blowingly tiny, *squeaks at the thought of tiny snakey cuteness* |

Posted - 18/07/2013 : 07:18:40 Good news on Zeus's shed, sorry that it was in pieces. Hoggle's first shed with me was in lots of pieces an I had to remove the tail tip which was miniscule and really hard to see (prob my poor eye sight due to age, lol) I have Hogggle in a 5l RUB and added a small clip lock tub with a hole cut in 4 a moist hide and leave it in permanently for him. Hoggle shed again last week and it was perfect, so hopefully Zeus's second shed with you will be good. I put his first shed down to the stress of moving and his new home - it was two days after I got him home and had no idea he was due to shed. They are awesome litle snakes, Zeus was really fast when I first got but has settled and is now a lot calmer, so hopefully Hera will calm down for you. |
