I will be moving Agatha into a 6ft x 2ft viv in a couple of weeks and I am wondering about the ceramic. I currently have a 150w flat ceramic (not sure if they have a special name) on a pulse stat so am thinking of getting one with a little more power for the bigger viv. I am looking at a 200w conical ceramic (light bulb shaped) as I have been told that they give off heat better as the flat ones push a lot of heat up to the top of the viv as both sides heat the same creating a viv with a hot spot on the outside. Will a 1"-2" gap from the bulb to the bottom of the guard be enough?

I doubt if you will improve the heat going up to and through the top of the viv by switching to the conical ceramic. I use a 100 watt on a pulse stat in a 3 x 2. The heat 'loss' is enough to maintain the viv on top to give a constant 30* C hot spot on the floor for the MBK. This is even with a half inch air gap between the vivs.

Personally, I would try the set up with the flat ceramic first and see how well it works. I don't like the lamp and guard for the visual intrusion. Also, I nearly had kittens when Vambo my 6' Carpet Python actually pulled his full length up and coiled around the guard.
