what have you tried and what combo do you think is best and why?

ceramic/dimmer
pulse/ceramic
light/dimmer

ect...

I use dimmers and pulse for ceramics, no real difference. If you ever intend to use bulbs then its dimmers if not stick to pulse.

Pulse for ceramic: Power rating, accuracy and stability.
Dimmer for heat lamps: Power rating and to prevent lamp permanently flashing on/off which reduces lamp life as well as being visually annoying.
Standard Mat Stat for mats. Pulse stat can also be used safely with mats.

These are the designed uses for stats and should be used as intended.

I use a pulse on a ceramic. Works a treat x
