Can anyone advise me properly as I know one or to of you have them! Main thing is size of enclosure, or what type of enclosure really. And the mantises* off eBay? Opinions on that? |

Posted - 21/11/2012 : 22:27:17 Hi I decided to have a go with mantids, I got them from Metamorphosis at September Donny. I have a young African Lined that I keep in a half pint cup and a slightly older Giant Asian in a sweet jar, both seem good beginner species and will eat any prey items, I keep them on top of heated viv, temperature wise, lower temperatures (room temp) will mean lower metabolism/less active/live longer, high temperature (28c) more active but will go through life stages quicker, extremes of either will obviously kill them. I have seen those on Ebay, I can't imagine it would be a problem but you obviously can't view them and really young ones are delicate and often die.
They are really cool, cant wait for mine to fully develop. |

Posted - 21/11/2012 : 12:19:10 Hi,congrats on decided to get a mantis,they are awesome!
Really you need to decide what type you want first and then take a look at the care requirements for that species. I've a sphodromantis aurea (Congo Green),she's ok at room temperature,I spray her enclosure every few days and feed her about twice a week (she eats anything, even tried my daughters hand!). originally she was kept in a half pint plastic cup with some mesh held on by an elastic band, one twig placed diagonally, kitchen roll on the base ( held the humidity when sprayed),after a couple of moults she was moved into a plastic pint cup set up the same way,and now she's larger she's now in a sweet jar with an artifial plant, kitchen roll folded up on the bottom, mesh vent in the back and a hole cut in the lid and replaced with mesh. Some species require more heat, more humidity,or more ventilation and some won't need enclosures as large due to being smaller mantids. Theres also some species that will only take flying prey where as others will happily eat whatevers thrown in. If you haven't already, take a look on uk mantis forums. Theres some good care sheets there. I'm not sure about the ebay thing as I've not done that myself sorry. I got mine from www.metamorphosis.gb.com,they really know their stuff. |
