My little hamter chester has a respiratory infection he's been to the vet and is on antibiotics but the next 48hrs are critical.

he's not eating his mix food at the min and has lost loads of weight, he will eat fresh bits like small amounts of carrot which the vet says is good that at least he will eat that. but my question is will he be ok having small amounts of fresh stuff daily? the dilema being i dont want to add an upset stomach to the situation but at the same time i dont want him to eat nothing. Advise please peeps

Poor little thing

My MJ did the same, got better, perked up, then crashed hard...

Myco is a nasty bug.. (related to TB in humans)

sad news, chester has passed, the little guy went down hill really quick. got him out just after 8 to give him his second dose of baytril and he was really subdued, gave him his meds cleaned up his eyes and mouth then put him back to have some tea, checked on him again 30 mins later and he was really cold so tookhim out and microwaved a sock, sat with him for 45mins trying to warm him up, he seemed to perk up at one point but unfortunaly he died in my hand.

Paul you are absolutely right, i had a hammy once that was either dropped or jumped from someone, he had to have an eye taken out/ stiched up but he was a-ok :)

When I was keeping Hamsters as a young lad I'd share meals with them.. They ate fresh all the time with no issues.

Good luck with your little one! ( I lost a Rat to a RI (Myco) not that long ago..)

Awww, poor hammy. I agree with the vet, at least he will eat small bits of something. Antibiotics have a tendency to cause an upset stomach on their own, it is a quite common side effect. I would be inclined to give him a little fresh stuff, just enough to keep his digestive system going (it might also provide a bit of moisture as he might not feel like drinking if he feels rotten).

Good luck
