I was just wondering, what are they like as pets? Also is it true that they require similar care to a corn?
I havn't researched them properly yet but I was just wondering what they are like as they have just got some lovely ones in my local and I just wanted to take them all home lol. Oh and how big to they get on average? I've heard they can get around 10 feet? x |

Yes since cornsnake are red ratsnakes :p
Oh! looool silly me. Well I don't know what type the ones i saw were, all i know is one was kind of yellow and the other 2 were orange! lol |

they are all much the same, however that does depend on the continent they are from originally, eastern ratnsnakes require very different care to western ratsnakes, as do european ones.
Russian rats for one require a much lower overall temp, 25 is about as warm as they should get, i used to keep mine at normal room temp without a heatmat and he was absolutely fine. Although, the snake room didnt drop below about 23 even in winter. |

Yes since cornsnake are red ratsnakes :p although it depends on the type of ratsnake, a black rat is going to typically act and grow more to corn sizes than a beauty ratsnake for example.
I would love a black rat and a rhino rat though <3 |

"ratsnake" covers an awful lot of species from several different continents, all with differing requirements and behaviours. North American ratsnakes are easily cared for, just as you would a corn. Some get bigger and chunkier.
I have a pair of everglades, they get a touch bigger than corns and are a bit nippy when young and like to hide a lot :) |

I have a Russian Ratsnake and he's very different then my corn.
Kitty teh Corn spends most of his time hiding... Monster on the other hand spends a lot of his time out in the open..
Kitty is very meek, will only eat if I put him in a small dark container with his meal, Monster will climb right out of his Viv if he thinks there is a meal in it for him, and will snap at my fingers if they wiggle in front of him during 'hungry time' (even if I'm not feeding him he's still GTG!)
The rest of the time he's quite pleasant, has never bitten me or been aggressive/defensive.. in the 8 months I've been keeping him he's rattled his tail at me all of one time..
He's quite headstrong though, once he figured a way down to the floor from my desk he bee lines there and can't really be discouraged.. it's more about distracting him.
He's about a year old and is something like a meter long, roughly 120g.

Apparently Russian Rat Snakes have lovely temperaments and grow to 6ftish, I'd love one! |

Yeah, I heard that too, but the only texas rat snake I have met was super lovely. I guess he was the exception to the norm. Good job he was nice though because he was closer to 7 feet than 6... |

And that texas rat snakes can be quite nasty at times, well most of the time, so I have been told. |

I think size and temperament depends on what type of rat snake you get (and also on the snake itself). I have heard that the bairds rat snakes can tend to be more nippy and that the texas rat snakes tend to grow a bit bigger than the others, about 6 feet. |

I have a Grey Rat Snake and just care for it similar to a Corn.
They have a bit more character than a standard Corn and are a bit more active. They appreciate a bit of climbing, I made a high hammock and he spends more time on it than in the floor hides. I think 10 feet is the exceptional maximum rather than the rule. At the moment Mirkey is around the 5 foot mark and going by his growth rate I would expect him to top out around the 6 foot mark.
If you get a feisty one be prepared to take a few nips. It will calm down quickly with a bit of regular handling. I had Mirkey sorted out within a couple of days from being a demon from Hell to literally eating from my hand.  |
