hi I have 2 thermometers in my crestie tank, 1 digital which sits on top of light hood and 1 digital thermometer/hygrometer which sits inside the tank, my problem is the 1 on top says 30 and the 1 inside says 22 , i have the heat mat on the outside of glass on the side but the probes for thermometer and theromstat are by the heat mat inside the tank , should I put the probes outside the tank on heat mat or leave them where they are? Stumpy seems ok happy enough although I rarely see any evidence of him eating anything :/ I would be grateful for your views

i use the mat on the outside.. stat probe and thermometer on the inside of the glass held it the center of the heatmat with suction cups and its set to 21-23ish and mine do fine! :D im sure 25 will be okay although try not to let it get much warmer. I am using reptile carpet atm to monitor there poop and they are deffo eating, so i am going to switch to coco husk next week as the rep carpet struggles to hold humidity up. To keep track of growth i weigh mine every week or so on digital kitchen scales! :) i hope this helped!

i had the bark, and goyle decided to eat it, so i had to take it out, he now has exo terra moss matting. i would say kitchen roll is better for young ones so you cam see if they are pooing :)

The soil stuff is fine, it can pass through if accidentally eaten, coco brick stuff is best and pretty much designed for cresties in mind.

If you have lights on then even if they arent your heat source they dont care they will get hot anyway. Thermometers on top of the light hood is not inside the crestie tub where they are, you only need to measure things inside and heat rises so if you have lights on that will be much hotter up there than anywhere else.

Thanks for your replies :) heat is at a steady 25 now according to thermometer on top of the light hood, feels quite cool in there though not used to that :/ I don't have light for heat I use heat mat stuck to outside of glass and a thermostat as recommended by someone on here :) , I have the soil type substrate which makes it difficult to see his poop. Do you think I should change to plain old kitchen towel untill I get used to it ? Thanks all :)

30*C is excessivly too hot!! theres a chance that it could kill your crestie keeping the temps that high. temps need to be in the 21-25*C range, anything higher and it can start to become dangerous.

If its by the lights then thats where the heat is coming from, switch to energy saving bulbs to stop them heating up. You need a thermometer monitoring the heat mat temperature (controlled by a thermostat) and ambient will take care of itself. I stick a thermometer probe directly to the mat area, that way I know that reading is as hot as it can possibly be in the tank.

30 is too high, i have mine 23-26 as long as you are finding poop, he is eating!

I would say 30 is a teeny bit high but 22 is perfect fr ambient x
