what sizes do people use for other snakes (boas and pythons really), what size do people start for younger snakes?

It depends on how big the snake is as to how big the RUB needs to be, they say the smallest a RUB should be is length+width=snake length

I started my Boa in a 18 Litre RUB but within 6 months she had outgrown it, then I put her in a 32 Litre not rub but some other tub but she outgrew it after about 3 months, She is now in a 3X2 vivarium and she has just about outgrown it and will be moving into her 6X2 probably in the next week or 2.

You will struggle to find a RUB big enough for an adult Boa so you have to be prepared to upgrade them to a vivarium at some point.
