Hi
I'm relatively new to keeping snakes, i got my first around last October, an Okeetee named Cherry, she is yearling and has just recently had to have one eye removed. I guess i'm joining this site in the hope of meeting other people out there who, like me, own a living innuendo.

I have wanted to keep snakes since childhood .... so naturally my mum bought me a hamster. Once I left home (and student houses) the first thing i did was go and get myself a snake. I'm also looking after 2 fussy ball pythons, that i do not own, but am trying to find a loving home for.

I'm sure there is plenty of there i could find to say, so just to be on the safe side i'm gonna stop writing here.

xx

thanks for all the welcome messages, this web site seems a lot more friendly then some i have been looking at.

Its a relief to know there is someone else around with a one eyed snake, gives me confidence that cherry will be ok. I don't know what caused the problem with her eye, and nether did the vets or specialists she visited, but it went from nothing, to very bad over a few months. Here eye was removed on Friday, so she is still in the early stages of getting used to it all. I have put up a post and picture about it in the General health forum, and I'll put up a picture on how she is doing today later when i get her out.

thanks for the info on the pythons, i'll check out the website, see if there is any advice on getting them to feed.

Hi Amy, it is really good that you have joined us and you have definitely joined the right place to meet the right people ! This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . You really have jumped in at the deep end with your snake keeping and it is amazing that you have taken Cherry on. Why was her eye removed and how long ago was is? We have another forum member who has a one-eyed snake and it is amazing how well they adapt. I think the only issue Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson (her OH named him ) has is when he sheds he needs some help, which isnt surprising.

Lots of our members have always wanted a snake since childhood and have had to wait patiently until the time is right....while others are younger and seem very capable of working out how to get what they want from their folks !!

You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

I am not sure if you do this with Cherry, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

Well done for keeping to the unwritten forum rule without even knowing about it - pics as soon as possible! Cherry has beautiful colouring and I cant wait to see more pics of her.

Am sorry about the hassle you are having with the ball pythons you are looking after....I have heard they can be tough to look after. Have you thought about advertising on a site like Pre-Loved? I know that is where I got my first corn from. You could write up a list of questions to ask potential owners to make sure they know what they are taking on. It also may be worthwhile printing off the care sheet from our sister site - http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/, and guiding the new owners to it.

A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You have started down that corn path so be warned!!
