I'm not sure I will stick around as I have a tendancy to drop off forums! But I have been browsing here for a good few days so thought I would introduce myself.
I have been interested in snakes for a long time - when I was a child I even took out books from the library to study them, in the hope that my mum would agree to me getting one... that didn't work :P but I got the knowledge. I've nearly finished a 2 year Animal Management course and that has just served to increase my desire to own more exotic pets.
I do own dogs, and I wont lie - they are my favourite animals! I have a male Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who I do lots of things with - breed showing, agility etc. He is great fun. But at the moment, dogs are all I own and I would love to have more.
I did some work experience with an exotics pet shop last year and I enjoyed it, even managing to get over my fear of spiders and hold some tarantulas!
Anyway, I'm hoping to move out with my girlfriend later this year, and we have both decided we would like a snake. And what better snake to match the colour of my dog than a Corn?  No seriously, it's not just the colour that attracted me, I've heard they are a pretty good starter snake :) |

(Crazy JJ - My mate has been breeding her chipmunks, so they're expecting soon. They are very loud when they start chipping, but very cute!)

Firstly Bekki, what a beautiful dog! I can totally understand why you love the breed and he is such a gorgeous colour. I have always had dogs but am afraid that I tend to go the rescue route and have always had mongrels, but they have been so much more than just pets to me.
I guess I better welcome you properly  ....so hi, it is really good that you have joined us! I can totally understand the moving from one forum to another, especially when you are testing the water to see what a forum is like and you are also just testing the water as to whether a snake is like for you - especially a corn. So test us out and you will soon see that this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship  . It is fantastic that you are doing your research into what snake you may want to buy and what is involved instead of just going out and getting it....which unfortunately happens all too often  . I know I am biased towards corns, but putting that bias to one side I think they are a great snake to start out with....they certainly seem to be the easiest to look after with feeding and handling etc (although I have no experience of other snakes) and I was recommended to get a corn as a beginner's snake....and havent looked back.
I am not sure what morph of corn might match Felix's beautiful colouring....maybe a caramel?? You could try looking at this site, although I will warn you that when you go on it you then come off with a wish list of all the different morphs you want! http://iansvivarium.com/cornsnakemorphs.php
As you have said, you have already been browsing so I suspect you have found that it provides great information. Just in case you havent found them yet (), the best place to look is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133
A really good topic to look at (that is a work in progress at the moment) is this - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878. It gives you a lot of the info you need for setting up a hatchling and getting started.
I am sure that you have already seen that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.
Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you  . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
Well done for getting over your fear of spiders like that  ....although I guess you werent given much choice! There has recently been a topic on here and it is surprising how many snake owners are scared of spiders  !
A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You are contemplating starting down that corn path so be warned!!

lol there is nothing wrong with wanting a pet rat... i must say i wouldnt mind a pet mouse but thats all it wil be is a pet... but im thinking chipmunks or just more snakies lol :D |

Although dogs are my favourite I have an interest in most animals, and I find reptiles in particular quite fascinating. Another species I would love to own someday are rats! Snakefood they may be, but they are lovely little critters.
I will keep browsing this forum and will definately come back with pictures once I finally get my snake :) |

Felix is gorgeous, love the agility photo. I'm dog mad so not many breeds I haven't come across. Amel snakes are very colourful, that's what I've got and he's lovely.

Herriotfan - it's great that you've heard of the breed! Tollers are great, I will be getting another in the future when I am more settled. I actually run a forum dedicated to the breed :)
I love the really vivid orange coloured Corns, so I thought maybe an amel as they seem quite easy to get hold of.
Figs - I see one of yours is calld Felix, great name that is the name of my dog (hence my username).

Corns are definitely the way to go - not that i've owned any other snakes, but what do you expect on a corn forum lol

corn snakes are in my opinion one of the best 1st snakes, i have no other snakies (now wanting a cali king though) but i wouldnt be without my snakies now... ive always wanted a snake and got my 1st one 3yrs ago... they are great snakes :D
ive always wanted a dog so i got the oppisite prob lol ;)
but anyways when you get your 1st snakie pics are defo needed :D but be warned corns are very addictive :D we all have that prob here ;) |

Welcome to the forum. Drop in and out as you please, it's just good to know there's a decent forum here if you want to use it!
I have dogs too, love them to bits. NSDTR perfect dogs for tons of activities. Lovely dogs to own if you're prepared to 'do' things with them. Bit like the border collie in that they do need a lot of input from the owner.
You can't go far wrong with a cornsnake as your first snake. They make super pets but won't bring things back to you!!!!
Just wondering what tan/rusty colour snake morph there is to go with the dog....maybe a normal?
You sound like our sort of person, sense of humour and animal lover! Enjoy your time here... |
