Hi everyone,
Just a quick post to say hi and introduce myself - I've been reading posts on this site for a couple of months now, and - Bill & Kathy Love's book clenched tight in sweaty palm - I finally took the plunge nearly three weeks ago, and bought my first corn: a nine month old female aztec lavender, whom I've named Meryl.
I'd really wanted a pet snake for ages, but I'd assumed they were too difficult to look after. I saw some bearded dragons for sale in my local pet store, and after expressing my concern that I wasn't altogether happy feeding live insects to my pet, the sales lady suggested a snake instead, and spend a while explaining their relatively low care requirements - certainly a lot less technically demanding than I was expecting! I couldn't have been happier, and spend the next three weeks praying for payday.
Spent ages reading up about all the different types of snakes, and really couldn't decide between a milk snake, corn snake or royal python. I was actually so impatient on payday that I ended up taking half a day's leave at short-notice! In the end, I incurred the wrath of the boss, a £15 train ticket, a four hour round-trip and a ten minute sprint to get to the pet shop before closing time. Oh, and I also got rained on, but it was all totally worth it! 
Anyway, blah, blah, blah - that's my story. Hi, everyone!

I know I am not HannahB  , and know nothing about morphs....but it may be worthwhile checking this out http://iansvivarium.com/morphguide/lavender/, it really shows the different colour variations within the lavender range. It doesnt show any Aztec Lavenders but this http://iansvivarium.com/morphguide/zigzag/ does show how the Aztec/Zigzag can also differ in colour.
Hopefully HannahB will answer your question properly and she does have experience of her morphs!

Hiya! welcome. When I got my first snake, I dragged a mate over to the shop, and I didn't realise till we were in there that he was petrified of snakes, centipedes, spiders etc, infact the entire contents of the shop....oops! :D
All worth it tho! |

HannahB, how does the colouration on a lavender change with age? I understand most corns get darker with age, but all the adult lavenders I've seen are noticeably lighter than my juvenile (who's about the same colour as your Liberty) - do lavenders get lighter as they get older, or are the pictures of adults that I've seen just particularly pale instances of natural variation between snakes? |

Thanks, Kellog - yeah, I got her records from the shop (the code doesn't mean an awful lot to me, though; the way I interpreted it, it looked like she hadn't eaten since mid-February, so I must be reading it wrong!), and I've got a little notebook set up so I can monitor he health/growth etc.
Herriotfan/Mozacchio - I'm looking forward to getting some photos uploaded; just have to get hold of a digital camera and a personal internet connection (doing all this via work at the moment!), and I'll post them right away. |

Hi Mathew, it is really good that you have joined us! You will have found that this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . It is so good to hear of someone who has done so much research into their snake before they get it....rather than just walked into a shop, seen something they like, bought whatever the shop said they needed and walked out again without knowing a thing about their new pet  !! You are definitely the type of forum member we welcome with open arms  !
Am sure you have already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. You have probably already found the best place to look - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. It is also worthwhile reading this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133
You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.
It sounds as though you may have a good pet shop there (even if it is a bit far away), but unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you  . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. Remember that no question is regarded as a silly question  .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! Kehhlyr has already mentioned the first place to look - the search button...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
Hopefully when you got Meryl you were able to get as much info about her as possible....shedding history, feeding history etc. I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

You certain went through a lot to get Meryl and am sure that you have realised that every bit of your boss's wrath, every bit of money for the train ticket, every minute spent travelling and every drop of rain was worth it just to get her .
But I had better warn you that you may be going through all that again - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You have just started down that corn path so be warned!!

Snakes are easier to keep than beardies if you don't like livefood but I love my beardie as well!

Hey, Figs, where were you trying to find in Liverpool? I live in the city centre - I went to the shop in Old Swan for advice, but ended up getting everything from Rhyll instead (no lavenders in Old Swan at the time). Felt a bit guilty about that at the time, but I still get all my food from Old Swan, so I reckon over 15-20 years they'll get more than their money's worth out of me, anyway!

it wasnt a shop though - somebodies house
that just so happened to be at the end of all the twisty confusing roads!
i feel guilty about shops too lol - i've got friends in both of the ones near me so i alternate between them when its time for mice |
