Hi Boys and Girls.
My names Lorne, been reading this forum for past couple of months, checking all the topics and gathering info.Have now picked up a Amel corn,10 days ago, only 5weeks old, feed 4 times, and shed. He`s had his settling in period of a week, took him out Monday night for a few mins, put him in a RUB,pinkie in, pinkie gone,in about 2 mins,so pleased with that. Its my son Tom, snake, but cos of his age he cannot post on here so i will mediate for him.Being as its his first snake, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and out surname starts with the letter A.He has been named ALPHA,Check his head markings out,the perfect A.Before you ask, heres a piccy.

Poor kid , but so sensible of you - good to remind them that it is theirs otherwise they tend to 'forget' their responsibilities and you will suddenly find that you are doing all the work - although, by the sound of it, you wouldnt mind gaining Alpha by default !

Thank You for the welcome.I checked out the pet shops first, for info pricing etc,but never intented getting one from them,i always use breeders, more specialised,in the early stages and hands on than pet shops,i find.
@ Kellog, yes i have read the care sheets, got a care sheet, and throw questions at my son now and then ,to make sure he has read them aswell,(after all,its his snake)cough cough.!!!But you are right,no question is silly,we all have our blank moments, and sometimes its quicker to ask .
Also from reading all the posts, thats where i picked up the PICCY`S rule, dont want to get told off on my first day....

Hi Lorne, it is really good that you have joined us officialy....after 'lurking' in the shadows for months ! You will have seen that this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . I am not sure how much information you already know about corn snake keeping, so sorry if I am repeating information you already know...but it is better heard twice than not at all.

You have obviously already checked out the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. The best place to look (just in case you havent found it yet ) is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133

I am so glad to hear that you gave Alpha the chance to settle in. You are rarely advised about the one-week no handling or feeding in a lot of pet shops but it is such an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you.

You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

Unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. Remember that no question is regarded as a silly question .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button(which I suspect you have been making use of already )...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

Again it is good to see that you got as much info about Alpha when you got him. I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

Well done for complying with the unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! Alpha is beautiful and I can definitely see why you chose his name !

A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" Your son has just started down that corn path so be warned....and it wont be long before you will be wanting a corn of your own!!

I look forward to getting to know you better.
