Good luck with waiting. I was supposed to be waiting until the summer to get my second corn but I couldnt wait and picked one up yesterday. To be fair tho, it's not for me it's for my youngest son. Does that excuse me lol |

Wow....what a fantastic Christmas present to prepare for! Never too early to start learning about them though....so, once again, well done!
One thing I will say is dont get too 'tunnel visioned' regarding morphs....I know some are stunning, but then you can also miss some beautiful snakes that are right there but are the 'boring' anerys and ghosts and amels and normals etc.... Just look at my 2 and you will see what you would be missing out on if you didnt take a look at anerys and ghosts  !! It is good to have a rough idea, especially so you know what a certain morph is going to look like as an adult as they do change so much....but just dont let it close your eyes to what else is out there  !

awesome that you are doing your research first, pet shops can lack on key information unfortunatly, which is a pain.
This site on the other hand does not hehe. has gotten me though alot of potentially sticky situations. the search button has also saved my life on a few occasions, great lil thing that

Welcome to the forum, it is great that you have joined us! And, as others have already said, I am so pleased that you have joined us before you have got your corn in an attempt to learn as much as you can. It is so aggravating  the amount of times someone walks into a pet shop, sees a corn they like, takes whatever advice given them and buys whatever they are told to buy and then goes home and thinks 'what now?'....or even worse, doesnt think that and just carries on without realising that they may be putting their corn at risk. So we greatly welcome those who join us in search of info before they get their corn - it gives a good indication as to what sort of owner they are going to be . This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . I am not sure how much information you already know about corn snake keeping, so sorry if I am repeating information you already know...but it is better heard twice than not at all.
Am sure you have already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. Kehhlyr has already mentioned the best place to look - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. I know this is early advise for you, but something worth keeping in mind. We always suggest you follow the one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)...no handling or feeding for the first week to allow your snake to get over the stress of the move and for it to get used to the new smells and its new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so it can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. You mustnt worry about your corn not feeding for that week, corns are a lot hardier than we realise and going for a week without food will not do them any harm, no matter how small they are. You are rarely advised this in a lot of pet shops but it is an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you. It is a hard week, very frustrating, but worth it for the snake's sake.
You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.
Unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. As already said, no question is regarded as a silly question .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! The best place to look has also been mentioned, in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is the search button...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
Again, early advice, but when you get your snake I hope you get as much info about it as possible....shedding history, feeding history etc. I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo  !!

There is also another warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You have just started down that corn path so be warned!!

Certainly is, i think far too many people go to their local rep shop and take everything they are told from them at face value, by a corn and a "full" set up get home set up and plonk the corn in. Not realising that such a crucial piece of kit such as a thermostat and digital thermometer are needed and not supplied with many starter kits.
I'm quite lucky that i did my research first and that the owner of the shop is quite knowledgable with most reptiles. |
