hi,
i am mark aged 41 from stoke on trent. i have been scared of snakes all my life until last year when i have found myself more and more interested in them. i am looking to get a snake of my own now and thought this would be the place to start also my local library. i dont want to get a large snake for a while until i get used to handling small ones. i really like corn snakes but also ball pythons but my local reptile shop keeps putting me of a royal for a first snake saying they are really fussy feeders. i know this is probably a silly question to ask on a corn snake forum but i noticed theroyalpython.co.uk site aswell and people on both sites seem to have both snakes. so my question is what would you recommend for a beginner to snakes.

got me first corn 8 months ago, now got three ,i'd agree wiv GP yearlings would be my choice, for the same reasons...... |

my personal choice would be to go for a yearling.......... hatchlings are too little bitty fiddley fast things!! |

great choice. very colourful corns. be aware of the bug though. i know have 5 corns all differents colours its an expensive bug  |

i would recommend getting a corn i got both my corns at 6wks theyre now 1 1/2yrs great escape artist when the were young. They are low maintenance n have great personalities bare n mind that corns grow to between 4-6 ft in length ive never had a python so i couldnt comment on them. |

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum. I have always liked snakes and when i decided to get one wanted either a ghost corn or a royal. The reptile shop told me to get a corn as they are easier to keep. I now have 2 corns and a royal. If it is a royal that you really want and you only intend to get one snake then i would say get a royal. If you are the sort of person that will stress out if the snake does not feed and are even a bit scared of snakes then i would get a corn as they are easier to keep. Hope this helps you a bit. |

I am the same as HannahB, a new owner of a snake and have started with a corn. Certainly they are small and think they are a great snake to get started with. By the time they grow you feel more confident and you can learn about them as they grow. (but then I am a biased corn owner!) xxx |

hey and welcome
as an owner who only has corns id say a corn - as a first snake i have found my lil guy to be a really good first snake.. hes easy to handle once settled in, feeds well and doesnt need tonnes of attention..
but there are others on here who own ball pythons (blue tongue dan springs to mind) aswell as corns and a variety of other snakes and they might be able to help you out more |
