Well I never anticipated becoming a corn snake owner but on Friday morning one of my cats, Ferbie, discovered this little fella in my garage.

I was more than surprised I can tell you!

Have to be honest and admit to never seeing a wild snake in the UK before and although I knew he wasn't a grass snake or Adder, had no idea what species he was, where he'd come from or whether he was venomous or not. The local vet couldn't identify him, but having posted him up on a few of my motorcycle forums it became apparent he was indeed a juvenile corny.

Well, we've decided to keep him as releasing him into the wild would almost certainly result in his demise so today we popped into a local reptile shop and bought a little tupperware type vivarium suitable for baby snakes and one of those heat pads.

I've made a little hide from my iphone box and he seems to be happy.

We haven't fed him yet... as the shop owner advised he should settle in for a few days first.

Well... we're looking forward to caring for him and watching him grow.

Cheers all!

Maybe better for your snake perhaps if you sit down when handling her, especially while she's still so small and wriggly - they can be buggers like that when they want to be

is it ok to handle? And should I still feed during a malt?

On feeding, at this age/size is one pinkie a week sufficient?

Cannily, I took this photo of the full moon that evening...

serendipity!

Go you.
Free snake that's eating and drinking happily. THEN you get a shed so soon after arrival.
Just wait until it's shed, it's even more impressive.

Do the checks after it's shed; Make sure the eye caps and tail tip are on the shed.
I'd also recommend getting a stat, although the mat allegedly cannot overheat, I have one that gets to just over 50 celcius without a stat, so could be dangerous to snakie at a heat that high.

Cheers.

He's beginning his first malt soon...

Best phrase to ever use, makes them sound so much more giant and dangerous doesn't it.

Just imagine giving a friend the description of "Hope you don't mind snakes, we've got some sort of constrictor snake as a new pet, it found us" makes the snake sound so much more beefy. Love it.

Welcome to the forums mate and what a cool snake and name!!
Must be more than chance he came upon you.

I nearly called mine Balin or Gimli.

So have you tried to track the owners? I'd imagine as he's so small that he might be an escapee.
I'd post a note through your neighbors door.

Have you had him sexed? It might be a she based on the tapering of the tail but that's not an accurate method.
Also, I think he's a normal morph but I'm rubbish at that kind of thing.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I don't think I want to track the original owners now... =o/

Having been serendipitously introduced to the world of snake ownership & husbandry I think we'll keep shtum there ... I know none of my nearest neighbours keep any form of reptile. We're all genuinely foxed as to where he/she came from.

I haven't sexed it yet, and would be reluctant to do that 'popping' test. TBH it bothers me not what gender it is... its going to take an age for it to get to maturity isn't it?

I've read they can grow to about 2m....

Thanks for all your welcomes, we're well and truly hooked on this now... if you'd suggested last week we'd be feeding and keeping a member of the constrictor family... I'd 've laughed out right... but here we are, a few days in... and totally reveling in the experience!

Thanks ALL!

Something remarkable happened yesterday...

I handled him for the first time. It was the first time I've ever handled a snake. He was very active at around 7pm and moved from hand to hand & up my arm. He was totally non-aggressive and didn't appear phased at all... infact I think he quite enjoyed it!

... but this is the remarkable bit... as I lowered him back into his viv... I attempted to show him his water bowl and coiled just above it.. he took at least 12 or so gulps while still in my hand! I could see his little cheeks pulsating with every gulp. How cool is that! The guy in the reptile shop said he'd only ever seen his snakes drink on three occasions, and judging from the few posts on here I think it's quite rare to witness this... let alone while still held in one's hand. I have a feeling we're off to a good start.

... I got the inkling he was actually quite hungry, so today I popped back to the shop and bought some pinkies.

We've just had him out the box for another brief fondling session

and I fed him his first pinkie. There was no hesitation... he went straight for it [striking, but not coiling unduely]

He has now just got the whole pinkie past his jaws! Its incredible seeings its much wider than his little girth...

WOW... I'm really pleased he's eating & drinking.

Well that really is something you don't see everyday! Although there was that one they descovered in a cornflake box a year or so ago! He looks gorgeous anyway, congrats to the new proud snake 'mummy' or 'daddy', he's certainly a cute baby!

Cheers again guys!

I love the name 'kellog' but there seem to be quite a few on here by that one... Crispin, or Crispy for short is topping the charts at the moment.

... I really do feel quite privileged to've found him! They're fascinating creatures.
