Posted - 21/11/2013 : 15:16:15 Though I'd say hi, I have been an avid reader of the website for some time and have found lots of great tips.
I have been looking into getting my 8 year old a corn snake, we already have a Beardy who is loved greatly by my older daughter and thought a corn snake would be ideal for my younger daughter who has loved snakes for some time. We have been to see a few snake experts and after feeding and handling them we feel that a hatchling (was our original choice) is probably a bit to skittish for my daughter and was suggested by one guy that we maybe looked to re-home an older corn snake. I will be housing in the large Vivexotic Vivarium, the heatmat and thermostat are running at the right temps so just need a few hides now and also some LED lights which I have on order.
Will hopefully visit some animal resuce places tomorrow to see whats out there.

Posted - 22/11/2013 : 16:49:05 Went today and had a look and handled a good few corns, all different sizes and colours etc.
I will be taking my daughter back tomorrow so she can choose one, the lady there was very helpful.
Thanks for all the advice. |

As you will have seen, this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . Its great that you are doing so much research before getting your daughter her snake, not only online but hands on experience as well. You've probably already looked at these threads....but better heard twice than not at all. The best places to start are the Care Sheet and Your 1st snake. You'll also find a lot of information on viv set-up, feeding, shedding and handling in General Keeping Information - Stickies
If you can't find what you want to know using the search option, then please don't hesitate to ask. We don't bite....much . In the top right corner, by the search option, is 'Active topics'. You can use that to access those threads that have been commented on since you last logged in.
I totally understand why you have decided against getting a hatchling, with it being for your daughter. Personally I think for a child it is better to get a slightly older snake, that is used to being handled and has a good feeding history. I started with adults and 3 of them were rescues. 1 did have handling issues because she'd been mistreated by her previous owner but it just took time and patience. You can see how I overcame her mistrust of me in Handling tips Its good to know that you have the right set up ready for if you find the right snake for your daughter today. It will be blessed to be going home with you.
Pics are compulsory, of course. Hopefully this will help - How to post images using Photobucket ....although it is playing up at the moment .....So you need to look at this as well Photobucket update . You can also post pics via Facebook. Select the IMG option (top of box, yellow and looks like a mountain), then just right click on the Facebook photo, select copy URL and add them between the [img] tags. Hopefully that makes sense !
A word of warning, this won't be your last corn....they are addictive .
