Hi everyone, just over a week ago I bought my first corn snake... I say first because I'm afraid I'm already thinking about number 2 lol. We think she, sex is really unknown, is an okeetee although that's just a guess because when I asked what colour she was the shop keeper said 'red?' So I've had to look up all the different morphs for an idea. I went for an hatchling and came away with Tekka who is as big as my daughters adult snake so her age is undetermined too. She was just so cute I couldn't resist although I was a little worried about how little I did know of her history.
The thing is 5 years ago I didn't see the attraction then my youngest wanted a snake, I was even slightly scared!, so along came an Amel and then another, I was fascinated and they were so small who could be scared. Well five years on, the unthinkable, the youngest is moving out and the snakes are going with her! so I thought why don't I get one for myself....now I'm thinking 2 sounds such a nice even number and I could get that hatchling this time. But I really really will stop at 2.....

She is such a lovely colour :) The photo size looks fine to me btw.

Thanks Mort, I accidentally broke the link to the photos, I have added two hatchlings to my collection in December. This is the latest of Tekka. Hope the pic isn't too big,I do seem to have problems with photobucket I've downsized this photo twice but I'm not sure it's taking affect !

I can't see the pics, but I think normal are fab....and definitely not normal. I too had my kids ask for a snake which is how we ended up with Loki, then I got the bug and we now have 17 between us. 14 being mine
Welcome to the forum and the snake keeping bug

Your snake is a lovely looking normal

Welcome to the forum. I originally said I would get just one. Then that turned into four...now I have six corns and three other reptiles!

Couldn't wait any longer....bought 2 monk field vivariums and am getting hatchlings next week by which time il have tested the set ups. Fingers crossed all goes well but should be a new owner of a couple of babies this time next week but I'm not jinxing myself by saying anymore but photos will follow as soon as they are settled enough and photo bucket allows!

Thanks for the kind comments and I'm glad others think she's gorgeous too. I like the idea of my first snake being a classic what a perfect start to my family of ...did I really say only 2? Don't you think 3 sounds nice and odd and so many colours...how could I possibly choose only one more favourite

Hi and welcome.
Carolina's are beautiful, as Mother Nature intended....no such thing as "just" a normal!!!
As long as you have all that's needed to care for the snakes why shouldn't you have as many as you like? The more the merrier.
smart bunny Posted - 09/11/2013 : 13:52:15
She's gorgeous, your daughter must need her eyes tested :P (No way enough black for an okeetee as others have said)
Redware Posted - 09/11/2013 : 09:06:47
Wow what a pretty snake! Deff a Carolina, but a stonking good one!
Kellog Posted - 09/11/2013 : 08:47:24
Plain !!!! You need to have a quiet word with your daughter !! I agree with [b][Razee/b], Carolinas are gorgeous and so often overlooked because they are 'normal' .

It's wonderful that she has settled so well with you, especially if she was unhandled before. So much of that will be down to your confidence and calmness, she knows she's safe so responds accordingly .

Hello and welcome - and yes, she is a normal / classic / Carolina - but there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone should have a Carolina, they're gorgeous :-)
Cassie Posted - 08/11/2013 : 23:47:58
Thanks Kellog, my daughter thinks she's rather plain compaired to her snakes but she's so sweet and placid when you think I bought her already grown and un handled I fully expected her to be a bit stressed the first few times I held her but she settles so well and even seemed to enjoy it from day one
Cassie Posted - 08/11/2013 : 23:37:03
Thanks silverwings, when I bought her I first thought she was a normal but then I was told she had black so had to be an okeetee when we went through all the pictures (thanks daughter) so I thought ok she's a not well marked okeetee Kellogg said thick black so I thought ok not an okeetee. Thank goodness you and the snake knows what she is (other than cute of course but I'm biased )
Kellog Posted - 08/11/2013 : 23:23:26
I agree with Silverwings, Tekka is a normal/wild/Carolina - http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/normal/ But then I'm notoriously awful with morphs so don't believe a word I say .

I can see why you adore her and she's stunning, whatever she is .

SilverWings Posted - 08/11/2013 : 23:09:05
Definitely don't think she's okeetee, just a normal corn snake. Okeetees have very thick black borders.
Cassie Posted - 08/11/2013 : 22:06:53

Ok hopeing this works and you get to see my baby Tekka, must admit I'm now wondering if she has enough black to be an okeetee, if someone could tell me for definite I would be really grateful, although i adore her either way and I don't think she cares much lol.

Hi Cassie, and Tekka, it is really good that you have joined us. This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship .

I'm sure you've learnt a lot about looking after snakes from your daughter, and probably had to look after hers on more than one occasion , but I'm also guessing you want to learn as much as you can yourself. If you can't find what you want to know using the search option, then please don't hesitate to ask questions. We don't bite....much . In the top right corner, by the search option, is 'Active topics'. You can use that to access those threads that have been commented on since you last logged in.

I think it's wonderful you've taken on an older snake. Nearly all of mine were bought as juveniles/adults. 1 came with no history at all and another came with a bad past , but you wouldn't know it now when you handle her . It's very rewarding being able to offer a home to older snakes that might otherwise be overlooked as people tend to want hatchlings.

I love the way the shop keeper called her 'red', he's obviously as much of an expert on morphs as I am ! I think what will make her stand out as an Okeetee is that her saddles will be bordered by a much thicker black band than found normally. I'm sure you've looked here but this shows it well - http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/okeetee/

Pics are compulsory, of course. Hopefully this will help - How to post images using Photobucket ....although it is playing up at the moment .....So you need to look at this as well Photobucket update . You can also post pics via Facebook, just right click on the photo and select copy URL and add them between the [img] tags.

You are already thinking about your 2nd snake after only having had Tekka for a week, you've definitely got the corn bug .
