Hi there,
I'm just in the process of getting set up to get my first corn snake. Hoping to have one in the next few weeks.
So for now I'll probably just be lurking and absorbing information rather than contributing much.

Very excited at the prospect of snake ownership.

Well, I've gave up on getting the old vivs from a friend (It's been a month and they aren't close friends, so I can't prompt them too much).

So I went on Swell Reptiles and ordered this lot...

VivExotic Repti-Stax Vivarium Small (23") Mussel
Habistat Heat Mat 7w (6in x11in)
Lucky Reptile Coco Cave 1/2 (DLC-3) x2
Swell Premium Aspen Bedding 5ltr
Habistat Mat Stat
Zoo Med Repti Rock Water Dish (X-Small)

I'm thinking that size of viv should do 12-18 months. Is that right?

By looking round other posts I gather the thing to do with the heat mat is secure it with some Aqua-Mate, yes?

What's the best thing to get to secure the door of that viv? I have 2 cats and a 4 year old. The 4 year old's pretty good, but the cats are wee buggers with a track record of getting into cupboards when motivated. I'm assuming one of those display-cabinet type locks with a key is my best option, but do I need to get any particular one to fit this brand of vivarium?

Any advice appreciated.

Hello there. My daughter is the snake person in our family. We have chosen a nice little carolina, and hope to have it next week. In the process of setting up the equipment.

Yes I love Anerys, or any grey/black pattern. One of those would be my first choice, but to tell the truth I'm not too bothered about the morph as it's to be my first snake,I'm more excited about it's general snakeyness than it's decor. I think the common reddish corn snake is beautiful, so it's most likely I'll end up with one of those as there's more of them around.

I'm currently waiting for a friend who used to own a pet shop to have a root around in their garage to get me a set up (cheap!) apparently they have everything. Once I have everything cleaned-up, fixed-up and set-up I'll start looking for a snake in earnest.

YAAAAAY for Anerything Anery!and kudos for the "upcycling/reclaiming" of previously enjoyed kit ....Anery's also come in Pinky/Lilac, Orange/Yellow markings Check out http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/ lots of loveliues there...
