Hi All

Iam Nikki and i have recently got a rescue Corn Snake its fully grown I hope as its about 4.5 ft long iam not sure what variant it is
It was found in a back garden sunning its self but looking a bit thin and skin a bit marked
my friend that already has 2 Corn Snake
had her nauber come over all panicked because there was a snake on the patio
So Anna went to see what type of snake it was and see if she could help
only to find they were on the phone to the Police
Seeing it was a Corn snake she rescued it and tried to find its owner but with no joy
not having a spear Viv or space for another Snake and as I have always liked her Snakes she asked if i could look after this one so thank god for ebay i have a viv with heat mat all set up and the corn snake at home he seems intent on escaping at times and seems happier in the 3ft viv than the small pet box that was all Anna had to keep him in i say him iam not sure if its he or She
hes still a bit skittish but iam taking my time with him and dos not like just being held in just my hand proffering to be draped around me ( i gess he feels more secure that way
I have had him for about a week now and he has shead the first night he looks so much better as he had some marks on him before but he has not eaten since Anna rescued him so iam a bit worried about him and i need to name him yet
Hear are some Pics

It sounds like you are doing brilliantly Nikki , especially considering the short time you had to prepare for him. I'm so glad you took him when you did, to stop him stressing out. It can't have helped him that he was 'blue' when he was rescued, so will have been feeling even more vulnerable than usual. Now that he's shed and is in a better home I'm sure he'll settle in well .

Iam looking to feed only once a week I have tryed him on a large i was given with him
as he would not take it I now have some medium for next time and i am leaving him this week
settelin as you say the last thing we wont to do is stress hum out
his Viv is a work in progress as i said i only had a week to get a Viv and set it up
and its far batter than the pet box he was in after being resued as iam trying to do whats best for him
and he is so much calmer now than when i got him he was stressed in the pet box
thats why he cam to me earlyer then we had planed Anna wanted him to off shed and feed before i took him on
but he was not happy in the Box so he come to me when i only had the basic Viv setup
I now have a improvised hide in the cold side

Hi Nikki, it is really good that you have joined us....and thank you so much for offering this beautiful snake a home . He really is gorgeous....and certainly doesn't look thin in the pics. Hopefully you'll find that this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship .

It really does help having friends with snakes, but if you want guiding to particular threads so you can learn as much by yourself then I'm the one for you, as Herriotfan has said ! You may have already already looked at these threads....but better heard twice than not at all. The best place to start is the Care Sheet, which is helpful. This thread will help you with his viv - Setting Up An Adult Corn Snake - My 101. Most importantly this shows how to set up the heatmat, with the thermostat and digital thermometer, needed to monitor the heat, making sure the probes are in the right position. He could definitely do with a hide in the cool end, even though he can burrow to hide there....he may only be doing that because there isn't a hide to go into.

As far as his feeding goes, he could probably do with a week of being left alone....to get over his adventures and get used to his new home. This means no handling or feeding for the week. As you'll know, corns can go a long time without food, so him not eating isn't a worry. It may well be because its breeding season, which may also be why he escaped....mine has just started to eat after stopping at the end of February. What size mouse have you offered him? I would guess that he would probably be on either medium or large mice normally, probably large. It may be best to offer him medium mice, so smaller than he's used to....it's how I got my male to focus on food not females . Only offer food once a week, any more than that and it will stress him.

Apologies for the information overload, I'm known for it . If you can't find what you want to know using the search option, then please don't hesitate to ask. We don't bite....much

I'm warning you now, he may have been unexpected but he won't be your last corn....they are addictive .

Xxx

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Well done for taking him on - and also for ordering him the essentials like thermostat and more hides! One word of warning though - you say the substrate is deep... it should be quite sp**** on the warm side really, as it will be over the heat mat so could block the heat a bit - also where are you measuring your temps? It needs to be with a digital thermometer probe in contact with the mat. If the probe is on top of the deep substrate then when he buries himself and comes into contact with the mat it will be a lot hotter there. Also if you are measuring with a dial thermometer then these are awfully innaccurate, and again the temp will actually be a lot hotter than it says.

Not trying to have a go at you or anything, I think you have been excellent to take in this poor snake and then come on here to find info, just wanted to point out a couple of things which are very easy to get wrong until you have completed reading up etc... you may already be doing it all correctly for all I know! :D

Edit: Arrrgh the asterisked word is spa.r.s.e lol!!

at 4 1/2 foot i take it hes fully grown ??

He won't be fully grown.
I've got a 4 year old who is over 5ft and still growing!
Snakes continue to grow all their life but the growth dramatically slows down so you'll think he's stopped growing.
Snakes are like people, some are huge and some are very small.
Very few get above 5-6 ft. The average being 4-5 feet.

Hello and welcome, Nikki, that's a stunning snake you've got there. Good on you for taking him / her on. As others have already said, the stickies make a good start, and any questions you've got - just ask :-) All the people on here are nice, and will be happy to help.

Somewhere in the stickies there is a guide to setting up for an adult. It's a great guide once you get all the gear.
The reason for the busy activity is probably due to this being the breeding season and your snake will be trying to get out and find a mate. That could also account for the lack of interest in feeding. As well as that it might just be that your snake needs more time to settle into his new home before he feeds.
He really is a stunning snake. Have you decided on a name yet?

Feeding wise iam not stressing to much i have other friends with Pythons so i no thay eat when thay whant to
the fact it breeding time may explane his whant to eascpe and lack off intrest in food
thanksyou for pointing me to the stckys i will read them with interest being a first time snake owner its a lot to learn but it has helped having friends with snakes I wasnt looking to gat a pet but this needed a good home He is stunning and i think he nows it lol
i havnt found a name thats him yet ( my boys have lots of ideas thow )
I can only gess how old he is not having any history for him i am gessing hes at least 5 years old becouse he 4 1/2 foot long ( i think hes a good few inches longer sines he shead )how long is the Max thay will grow to
Iam glad i got a 3 foot Viv and its good i have found this site for support as i wont to give him a good home

Also have you got his heat source on a thermostat? If the temperatures are wrong it will stress him out.

Hi Herriotfan

Thankyou for your advice and welcome :-)
at the far end of his viv there i a large hide its an upturned 10" bowl on 2 rocks witch he can hide under or hide behind this is on the hot side off the viv there is a thich layer of bedding that he hides in if hes needs to i have an other hide on order to go in the cold side witch i no he would like
but i only had a week to set up get and setup his viv and its far better than the small pet carrier he was in before and still a work in progress i am waiting for a thermastat for the heatmat to arrive the vivs at 72 Degrees so i think its close and he dose seem to move between the hot and cold side dependent on the temp of the house

Hello and welcome

Looks amel or creamsicle to me
As herriotfan sad; make sure your temperatures are OK and you have enough hides in there. He doesn't look particularly skinny to me so I wouldn't panic about not feeding just yet

Hi and welcome.
It's great that you've taken on this beautiful snake....well done!
You might find the caresheet on our homepage interesting reading.
There are some good stickies too on feeding and getting a new snake.
Just a couple of things that might help your snake settle into his new home...some more places to hide in his viv would be good. Even old cardboard boxed with a hole in would do or empty kitchen roll tubes.
Also have you got his heat source on a thermostat? If the temperatures are wrong it will stress him out.
Kellog will be along soon I expect and she will put in lots of links for you to read. I'd do it but I don't know how.
Anyway it's good to have you here and please ask if you have any questions. We will do our best to help.
