Posted - 19/12/2011 : 21:04:37 Hello.
I'm new to all of this. My local reptile stockist had a special deal and I was hooked. I bought a hatchling corn which I am told is 3 months old. I took him and his kit home and transfered him to the the plastic faunvarium (think its called that) and he was fine when I transfered him. The next day I gave him 5 minute handling as he was very active and curious - again fine - I was told to handle him as much as possible byt the reptile place. Then the day after that he kept on hiding under his wooden log everytime I went to get anywhere near him - and so I left him alone. Yesterday he coiled and struck out at me, I was only changing his water . Today I fed him as he was due to be fed but he struck at anything and anyone who goes near him - he ate the pinky without any problems. So where am I going wrong - he reminds me more of a rattle snake then anything else. |

Posted - 21/12/2011 : 12:34:29 Hi and welcome. Yep,you've been misled by the shop I'm afraid (as many are unfortunately). You need a heatmat, thermostat to control temps and a digital thermometer to record the temps right from the start. I'd recommend leaving him alone with no handling now for a week to settle in. |

Posted - 20/12/2011 : 16:44:14 Thankyou to everyone for your welcome and replies. I have only just found this site so didn't look for the care sheet until after I had bought the snake. I wasn't given a care sheet at the shop and only did as I was advised by the person who sold him to me. I was sold a small heat mat with the starter kit and no thermostat - I was told I wouldn't need one till much later. |

Posted - 19/12/2011 : 21:59:22 Generally when you get a new corn you shouldn't handle or feed them for 7 days. This gives them time to settle into their new surroundings (sights, smells etc). In those 7 days only go into its faunarium to change water and clean any poo they've left you.
Once the 7 day period is over feed the snake. Them don't handle for at least 48hrs (use thus rule after every feeding). Once that 48hrs is up with it being a young corn handle for around 5-10mibs daily so the snake gets used to you.
Since you've already handled and fed I suggest you start your 7 days from today to allow him to settle in. You'll notice in 7days he'll be much calmer. Dont worry about missing a feed, they can go months without eating. |
