Posted - 09/12/2011 : 10:30:54 i have just purchased a my first corn frow a friend of my wifes and got the complete set up including 3 year old snake for £100. after doing some research on the net i found out that the set up is not safe for my snake due to no heat shield round the heating bulb and the heat mat not being controlled by thermostat, obviously i will deal with these issues with priority , the last thing i want is a burned snake. do i need both methods of heating or can one be removed and if so which is the better of the 2. also he was due to feed on the day i got him so i offered food but he did not want to eat and i wondering if this is due to him moving to his new home. how long should i leave it before i offer food again. the previous owner was using tap water but i read that bottled water should be used cos it is better. sorry to be a pain with so many questions in my first post but i want to get things right for him as soon as is possible. thanks for your anticipated replies |

Posted - 09/12/2011 : 16:36:22 Everything is down to personal choice, I use red heat lamps on dimming stats on a timer which is on from 8am till 7pm for day time set at 28 degrees, when the viv temp cools the heat mats which are on 24/7 and controlled by a pulse stat kick in at 22 degrees so giving me suitable day and night temps, I also believe (even more so since reading this months reptile mag) that corns do gain from UV lighting and have in my 4ft vivs 24inch 2% uv tubes. I see no reason if you have a bulb for heating not to use it as long as it is used with a dimming stat. If you decide on this way of heating which I appreciate is more costly you must ensure you use the appropriate thermostats. |

Posted - 09/12/2011 : 11:02:33 Most people use LED's for lighting. They dont generate much heat at all and are cheap to run. I use the ones supplied by Ikea, link below.

Posted - 09/12/2011 : 10:43:17 thanks for your info. obviously as you suggest the heat mat is probably the best method to use for heating purposes so if i dont use the bulb the vivarium will be darker than it is now so is there a replacement bulb i can use just for lighting purposes |

Posted - 09/12/2011 : 10:37:11 Hey Bob32221, welcome to the forum. I would personally recommend just using the heatmat, along with a thermostat - there is no real need for a light (for heating purposes).
With regards to feeding, i would say to give your Corn a week to settle in (just changing water/spot cleaning) and then try it with food - as you may know or have read, corns (especially adults) can go months without food...so one extra week will be fine.
I do personally use bottled water for my corn, though i don't think it is essential (especially for adults) - it is fairly cheap and as I live in a particularly hard water area, this seems the best idea to me. |
