Posted - 15/06/2011 : 01:31:16 Hi guys,
Thought I'd check in here to help look after my baby Corn, seeing as I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! I should explain that I didn't just go out and buy one thinking it would be a fun pet to keep, I actually adopted it, it was brought into work (Jollye's in Thetford, Norfolk) in a black plastic bucket, and nobody else was able to take it on.
I'm not sure of the age or sex, but from looking at pictures I think it's an Amel :)the thin part of the tail is quite long, maybe an inch and a half to 2 inches long if that helps.

It's very skittish and doesn't like being handled, but I'm trying to gradually acclimatize it so as not to stress it out too much. I've measured it to be somewhere around 35-38cm, and is growing about 1cm per week :)I have been feeding a pinkie a week, except for the last feed where I gave 2, which it gobbled up straight away.
My step sister has a 5ft Snow, which I don't have alot to do with, but it's very placid and loves to be handled.
Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated, I had a read through the homepage and picked up alot to help me get started :) |

Posted - 17/06/2011 : 21:37:04 Hi to all, Seems as though I am not the only person in a similar position. Whilst out walking my dog 3 weeks ago i found a corn snake. As he was in a vulnerable position;ie traffic, I bought him home, contacted vets,RSPCA,local reptile shops all seemed unduly worried. We housed him for the first week in a temporary situation. We have now purchased him a 3 ft viv, heatmat and thermostat, next week we need permanent lightinglighting. According to what I read concerning shedding it seems that is due soon.In the last week his colour has darkened and his eyes have gone a greyish blue colour and he seems nervous. He has been eating well and hopefully is doing ok. Hope what I'm doing seems fine, any advice gratefully received.

Posted - 15/06/2011 : 10:20:24 Hiya,
I've been reading throught the stickies today, just taking in as much as I can really, they've been dead helpful
I did indeed leave it a week to settle in, just made sure there was somewhere for it to live. I bought the tank at work for just £10, and tbh it seems to be doing the job just fine, I intend to swap up to a decent sized setup in the next few months as there isn't a great deal of space right now, but I was starting from scratch and thought it would be better than nothing (hence starting with an upturned pringles lid over night, progressing to an old (sterilised!) ashtray that I'm currently using
It was found by someone in their garden, they went around the block knocking on every door and nobody had lost one, so they brought it in thinking one of us might be able to help as they were unable/unwilling to take care of it themself.
I went upstairs and grabbed a pic of the big one, it's roughly 4ft 4, because the tank is 4 foot long, and he was along the back wall and round the corner a couple of inches.

Posted - 15/06/2011 : 09:06:17 Hi Welcome to the forum. Your little amel is beautiful. Have you got a name yet? I agree that the caresheet is good and so is the suggestion of going through the stickies. If you have any other questions you can quite often find answers by doing a search. Well done for adopting the little snake. |

Posted - 15/06/2011 : 08:19:42 Hi and welcome. you have a lovely snake. Have you read the stickys? I found them really useful. I didn't have many unanswered questions after reading them, I have found them more informative than the web searches I have done.

Posted - 15/06/2011 : 07:24:36 hi and welcome, i have one and she's just over 40cm and is approx 9 months old although there is definately no way of telling age as they all grow at different rates. males and females o have different tail lengths but the only real way to be sure would be to get it probed by someone exerienced and then by breeding, if your not planning on breeding sex doesn't matter, good luck with him he's beautiful, have you given him time to settle in, by not handling or feeding for a week?, they settle much better if this is done - just spot clean and change water. My little one is flighty but calms down really quickly when she realises i'm not going to hurt her. |
