Posted - 21/04/2011 : 09:44:06 Hi,I have been lurking for a while knowing I was going to be adopting Colin, who is a beautiful Corn snake.I decided now he is here and settled I would introduce us both.
Colin came from a good friend of mine who 2 years ago was fit and healthy and he picked up a virus that has left him partially brain damaged and means he can no longer work and is unsteady on his feet. He is only in his late 30s :-\
Anyway my friend is moving to a small bungalow, so wouldn't have space for Colin, so I offered to help.
I have always loved snakes, Colin is my first, I have 6 dogs so that is my usual pet area . He is currently about 5ft and will be 5 in July. I settled him in and bought him a new log for his vivarium. The thermometer etc wasn't set up yet in the photos below ;D Now he is settled I will be weighting him and measuring as well again.
Here are some pictures he is very gentle but does like to dive down your top ;D

Posted - 21/04/2011 : 15:00:40 I think that's what my friend means when I have searched it comes up 'rosey ratcatcher' is a wild species of corn snake or as you same just wild/normal type :)
I was thinking of doing that with the bulb as other have on here, I will still have a guard on though even though it will be just more for me to clean out etc. I fed him for the first time Tuesday, that was interesting.
It's hilarious, I'm a vegetarian, so buy Quorn for myself but have mince and chicken wings in for my dogs and now have mice in the freezer for the snake!
Hope to get some better pictures today now he has settled for a while and it's been 2 days since he fed :) |

Posted - 21/04/2011 : 14:32:33 You sound like you have got everything well under control.
You could do what I have done with my light fittings I don't use. I have installed low wattage energy saving bulbs. I only put them on when I am cleaning out or on a hunt for poops but they have been really useful and don't emit any heat.
Can't help with the Rat Catcher colouring as I've never heard of it. He looks like a Carolina to me, otherwise known as a normal or wildtype. |

Posted - 21/04/2011 : 14:07:53 Hi sorry my name is Lindsay. Bulb guard ordered don't worry as it didn't have one but he has a heat mat on the left with a microclimate thermostat 100 on that at the far end with digital thermometer. The thermo stat prob is under the cave on mat as recommend by the manufacturer.
As I said pictures, are literally just as I moved viv from my car last week, we were just adding the wires etc after :).
My friend did give Colin some basking time under the bulb as well as mat but I have read on here there is really no need for both even though it was just for a few hours a day. I haven't used the bulb at all due to the fact it doesn't have a guard, I am just waiting for it to come, even if I don't use the bulb from now on I want it protected/covered for obvious reasons.
Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone seems lovely on here. I look forward to sharing Colin's adventures with you.
Also my friend said he Colin was Rat catcher colouring, would you agree?

Posted - 21/04/2011 : 10:20:57 Hiya and welcome. Sorry to hear about your friend. He must be disappointed to have to give up his snake but at least he knows that it has gone to a good home.
Colin looks fantastic. You might want to put a guard over that bulb tho. Snakes have a nasty habit of liking to hug the bulbs not always realising that it is too hot |
